John Derian and John Derian Dry Goods
It's a rare accomplishment when a store manages to give birth to an entire design sensibility, but John Derian did exactly that. It's equal parts global bazaar, Cape Cod flea market, and literary salon, and it's reflected in everything from his decoupage platters to the silk quilts, feather dusters, and brass candelabra that line the shelves.

Dossier
As an extension of its brand, this new biannual literary journal decided to open an independent bookstore in Fort Greene this May. And just as the magazine melds fiction with fashion and art, the shelf space not occupied by limited-edition volumes is devoted to prime vintage clothes, Pamela Love claw cuffs, sweaters by Cardigan, and signed Calder prints.

Project No. 8
Occupying a triangular-shaped wedge in a remote pocket of upper Chinatown, this spare exhibition-like store is all about restrained minimalism. Everything here has its precise place, whether it's a grayish green python Martin Margiela shoe or an A Détacher dress. A furniture/men's store of the same name just opened around the corner.

Dolce Vita
There's a countrywide mania for this well-priced accessories label, and no wonder: Its trendsetting pieces are also ultra-comfortable (even the wedge boots and stacked-heel peep-toes). As a bonus, the back holds party dresses by Dolan and Mara Hoffman, while DV by Dolce Vita—an even more affordable line—lives in a small space a few doors down.

Doyle & Doyle
In 2000, when the Doyle sisters took over a former leather store and transformed it into a tiny estate-jewelry boutique, it was one of the first destination shops in the Lower East Side. They recently doubled in size and added a small house line of eensy stud earrings and charms, cast in the shapes of spiders and letters. The collection takes its cue from the antique pieces on offer, like curlicue-carved lockets and mourning rings.

Edit
There are only a handful of great boutiques on the Upper East Side (probably because of the top-notch department stores and hardcore high-end designer boutiques in the area), which makes it easy for Edit to stand out. But it could pull its weight anywhere in town, as it offers two floors of standout names like Derek Lam and Marchesa.

Staggeringly high heels—laced with tiny bells—from Azzedine Alaïa are arranged next to Dries Van Noten flats.
