Searle

It started out making timelessly chic coats and has since expanded into a full-fledged chainlet selling everything from Walter dresses to Magaschoni tops. This Madison Avenue shop is its flagship—it has a slick black-and-white color scheme and two sprawling floors connected by a sweeping circular staircase.

Takashimaya

Serene and spacious; the highlights of this seven-story Japan-based department store are gorgeously packaged cosmetics, delicate jewelry, and an on-site florist that specializes in exotic blooms. There's even a traditional tea salon in the basement.

Yves Saint Laurent

There are two Manhattan locations of this ultra-glam French line to choose from, but we prefer the Upper East Side outpost. It's smaller (it doesn't sell menswear), and lots of attention is focused on the things we're most concerned with: namely, bags and shoes.

Zara

Its downtown locations seem to get more attention, and that's fine by us: It means the Lexington Avenue shop has less-picked-over merchandise and fewer weekend and after-work shoppers to contend with.

Coclico

A recent expansion nearly doubled the size of this unassuming Nolita stalwart, which is the home of the popular shoe line of the same name. The shop also carries heels from other labels like Chie Mihara, along with two racks of bohemian-inflected clothing, including embroidered Aoyama Itchome tunics, Mociun rompers, and floral-patterned Paul & Joe blouses.

Oak

This enduringly cool boutique is the unofficial outfitter of hipsters who prefer the understated over the ironic. And the converted warehouse space, with exposed pipes and garage-door entryway, has a stripped-down look that reflects the spareness of the clothes.

Bebe

For the largest Bebe selection, head to the dramatic, sprawling Columbus Circle location (in the Time Warner Center). Here you'll uncover more of its signature modern-bombshell pieces—liquid satin halter dresses, body-skimming trenches—than anywhere else in the city.

BOC

The Upper West Side used to be a bit of a retail wasteland, but in the last few years huge operations like Barneys Co-op and Intermix have popped up. Despite the competition, Böc, which debuted in 2005, remains the best one-off store in the neighborhood, with a gigantic sales floor and a truly impressive roster of talent, such as Margarita Saplala, Rory Beca, and Gary Graham.
