Lyell

Designer Emma Fletcher picked her mother's maiden name when deciding what to call her label, which is just one of the ways this well-loved collection nods to the past. Sweet and ladylike silhouettes cut from delicate floral and lace fabrics are the linchpin of her line, and all are showcased in her cozy shop.

Matter

Before opening Matter in 2003, Jamie Gray studied sculpture at the Pratt Institute, which explains the shop's focus on architecturally minded design. If you see a cool item in a forward-thinking, modern shelter magazine, chances are it's here, whether it's Areaware's wooden bear or slick Alvar Aalto chairs.

Mick Margo

Nadine Ferber Abramcyk, the owner of this out-of-the-way destination, claims that she never keeps more than about 10 key pieces in her own closet. And this sensibility is definitely reflected in her store: She embraces an effortlessly chic style season after season. Slouchy Clu tanks hang next to khaki green Isabel Marant dresses and Catherine Holstein jumpers.

No. 6

Morgan Yakus used to sell vintage clothing at London's Portobello Road flea market before she and stylist Karin Bereson decided to open their own shop. Occupying a former firearms store, this living-room-like space offers a trove of hand-selected '70s and '80s pieces, along with a house collection of bohemian dresses (which often sells out at Barneys Co-op) and other small labels, like Stine Goya and Anntian.

Opening Ceremony

One of the first boutiques to populate the now über-trendy intersection of Howard and Crosby streets (Jil Sander and Derek Lam just debuted there), Opening Ceremony continues to abide by its original premise: Every season, designers from a different country or region go up against a permanent collection of American labels like Alexander Wang and Boy by Band of Outsiders. Right now, Mexico is on deck.

Retail is in Leslie McKeown Czeban's blood: Her mom owned a boutique in her native Canada, and she worked there from age 13 on. Czeban can still be found at her five-year-old shop most of the week, advising clients on how to wear the wealth of pieces inside, whether it's a T by Alexander Wang tank or a Lauren Moffatt dress.

Steven Alan

One of the formidable forces in shaping NYC's boutique culture, Steven Alan's Tribeca emporium has fast-tracked many a major trend. Though shops that exclusively carry his collection of intentionally rumpled button-downs and shirtdresses now populate the city, the Franklin Street flagship, with its deep apothecary-like shelving and rolling-ladder-adorned, library-ish walls, is the best. Here, vintage Rolexes, Mara Hoffman dresses, and A.P.C. trenches happily coexist.

Zero Maria Cornejo

Now two locations strong—including a gigantic store on Bleecker—Zero + Maria Cornejo continues to turn out strongly cut, highly conceptual tulip-shaped dresses and cropped jackets. It's rare that the Chilean-born designer ever uses a print or pattern, focusing instead on intensive draping, which means that while many items look confusing on the hanger, they're extraordinarily cool to wear.
