Annick Goutal Nuit Étoilée Eau de Toilette Spray, $72, Saks.com.

There is something about looking up at the stars that makes you feel as if you’ve got all the time in the world. That all your shenanigans are not really of so much consequence, and that everything really is going to be all right.

This is especially true in the summer—at the ocean, in the mountains, looking out over the desert, anywhere far enough from civilization to actually see stars—when everything, for me anyway, is lighter and a little sillier and sexier than usual.

Somehow, this concoction of various citrus plus a bit of peppermint, mixed up with wild Siberian pine needles (I know, as if there were domesticated Siberian pine needles? But you have to love whatever might involve a wild Siberian anything, pretty much) manages to add up to something so evocative and like a star-spangled night sky that I kind of can’t believe it. Sexy without spice or sweet or any sort of over-the-top-ness, it is the rare (as in: practically never-before) “night” fragrance that would actually make me think, It’s nighttime, let me put some of that on.
