My Three—well, Four—Top Beauty Destinations

(from top left: Jivamukti Yoga Studio, The Sally Hershberger Salon Downtown, Dermatologist Dr. Frederic Brandt's Office, The Marie Robinson Salon)

Someone recently asked me to name my three favorite beauty destinations in New York City. I of course had to name four...

1. Jivamukti Yoga: I leave every class at the grungy, unglamorous studio feeling more beautiful than I did walking in. Of course I feel thinner and stronger and more limber and fitter, not to mention decidedly more balanced and calm, but I also LIKE my body about 1,000 better. Like, in the class I'm thinking, those legs look good! There is no better way to spend a little under $20. **Bonus: There is glowing-skin benefit that is not insignificant. If I want to look good for a date or an event, I make sure to go to Jivamukti right before it.

2. The Sally Hershberger Salon Downtown: Not only is Sally Hershberger the most talented haircutter ever on this earth, she also kisses up to no one, so her advice is pure, unadulterated honestly-what-looks-good-on-you. I have had Sally turn me away at a haircut: Your hair looks good right now! Don't do it!! Come back in a few months! What hairdresser does that?! Worth every penny!

3. Dermatologist Dr. Frederic Brandt: You sit in the waiting room and you look at all the people (wildly famous and not), and you think, "Why do these people need to go to a dermatologist? Their skin is perfect! No wrinkles, no acne, …." and then you realize, oh yeah, that's why I'm here.

Dr. Brandt and his partner Dr. Anolik are so good that there is NO crazy-looking over-doneness, ever. Every celeb you think is just their gorgeous, natural self actually goes here."

4. The Marie Robinson Salon: "Do you know how much people pay to have a colorist make their hair look like yours looks naturally?" Someone asked me precisely this question the day after I'd had my hair colored by Marie Robinson.
