Why Mermaids Are Totally Inspiring Our Spring Beauty Look

The last time I looked to mermaids for style or beauty inspiration, it was the Halloween of 1993. I had just seen The Little Mermaid and I thought Ariel and her fellow species were the most beautiful creatures in the world.

It wasn't long before I A) learned that mermaids aren't real and B) decided that Beauty and the Beast's Belle was actually my favorite Disney Princess, but now, 20 years later, mermaids are inspiring me once again.

It started with Spring 2013 Fashion Month, during which popular makeup looks included damp, beachy waves, bright blue eye shadow and aqua green eyeliner. Then I received Deborah Lippmann's newest glittery nail polish collection, aptly called "Mermaids", and that kind of sealed the deal. I'm a sucker for pretty colors and anything shiny and this sea nymph-like trend has them both.

The key, of course, is to not go overboard (except with the hair—go crazy with those waves). Use the bright and ocean-y hues to accent your look. Click through below to shop the trend!

True story: During middle school I once wore electric blue mascara and an uninhibited classmate asked me why I had mold growing on my eyelashes.

While I do admit that perhaps going completely blue was a beauty faux pas, I would, however, recommend using Chanel's new blue mascara on the outside lashes— just enough to make your eyes pop.

You'd be surprised at how not crazy sea foam and aqua green look on your bottom lash line or as part of a smoky gradient effect with shades of gold and brown.

To achieve beachy waves, nothing works like Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray. Finally, the brand has extended the best selling product into a line that will include sea breeze-y texture-inducing shampoo and conditioner.
