Sicily: so much lighter than I expected! The churches are whitewashed inside, with touches of sky blue, like a della Robbia. There are vast piazzas of cream-colored marble, as if you’re in Greece. The cliffs by the glittering sea are pale; even Mount Etna is pale. Light, but not lightweight. As we know, plenty rumbles beneath the pale Mount Etna; at the end of a pale, unassuming dirt road you find an ancient, resplendent villa where you end up walking barefoot over green-scented leaves in an orange grove, at a party for Dolce & Gabbana’s new perfume. An hour later, the orange blossoms open for the evening and the air turns intoxicating—almost sweet but not quite. Like that, Dolce is not quite what you expect from Dolce & Gabbana: There’s a lightness and crispness. But the heart of it is like the night air in a Sicilian orange grove: feminine, almost (but not) sweet and really sexy.
