Summer Haircut Inspiration: Lucky Editor Cristina Harrell's No-Fuss Bob
At the Lucky offices, editors never hesitate to share their style and beauty secrets. "Where did you get that?" and "What product did you use?" are questions often asked and readily answered. So naturally, when fellow staffer Cristina Harrell made the decision to cut her long, ombré hair into a blunt bob, we had to know every detail. Below, the digital production assistant reveals her inspiration, hair product must-haves and more!
Lucky: What inspired you to cut your hair?
Cristina Harrell: I've had short hair for most of my life—as a middle-schooler and high-schooler I was always dying it weird colors and chopping it up, so it was damaged and didn't ever seem to grow. As I was graduating school, however, I was determined to grow it out, mostly because I wanted beachy mermaid curls. But once it finally got long, it was unmanageable and I discovered that my hair doesn't hold a curl. Since I no longer held the same attachment to the idea of long waves, chopping it off was surprisingly easy. Plus, I have a bit of a baby face, so I think the bob length makes me look older.
What's different about your hair routine now that it's shorter?
It's much easier to maintain. When I had upwards of two feet of hair, I felt like I was constantly trying to brush out dreads and was shedding like a beast. Now, I use way less shampoo and conditioner, and on most days I can just hop out of bed and go without having to comb it. I'm a fan of Batiste dry shampoo.
Since I had my color done as well, I've been using the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette products. My hairdresser, Remy at Killer Hair Inc. in McLean, Virginia, gave me a gorgeous dark brown and I want to protect it for as long as possible! I've always used hair masks and deep conditioning treatments, too. I really like the Orlando Pita Argan Restoring Treatment Hair Mask and Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Renewing Treatment.
Have you had to adjust your makeup or style with your new look?
I feel like my new cut is so much more sophisticated! It's made me want to try to dress nicer in general. Since the color is much darker than the blonde-ish ombré I had before, I've been wearing more cream and white-colored clothing.
As far as makeup goes, I've had fun playing around with different lip colors, like bright orangey-red (Lady Danger from MAC is my favorite!) and feminine pinks that I used to avoid.
