When I was a kid, I never understood why my mother refused to get her hair wet at the beach or pool. To me, cannonballs, boogie boarding and staying in the water until my skin turned prune-like seemed much more appealing than keeping dry on a lounge chair.

Now, however, I totally get it. Contact with chlorine and salt water makes my hair so straggly, frizzy and unmanageable that I've seriously considered dusting off my old camp swim cap.
