How do I style my bangs?

From the right way to trim to three easy, pretty looks, the brilliant Kattia Solano, stylist and owner of Butterfly Studio Salon in Manhattan, knows what to do with bangs.

Perfect-bangs blowdry

  • Shampoo your bangs even if you're not washing the rest of your hair. Since they lie on your face, they tend to get oilier faster.
  • Don't use a brush until they're almost dry. Instead, with one hand, pull bangs tightly over to one side and blow-dry the roots, holding the dryer above your head so the air blows downward. Then pull bangs to the opposite side and hit again with the dryer. "You get a really smooth, flat finish," says Solano.
  • At the very end, flick just the ends through with a round brush. Move it quickly and you'll get the ideal amount of movement without poufiness.

Beachy waves

Part bangs slightly off-center; bunch them together with the hair framing your face and curl with a curling iron. This will blend the bangs with the rest of your hair. Scrunch in creams or mists to rough up the texture.

Pin back

Tease the bangs from the back for extra hold and height. Then brush back, smoothing in a bit of gel or serum for shine. Anchor with two crisscrossed bobby pins.

Side sweep

Blow-dry or flat-iron your hair straight. Take a tiny section of hair from one side, mist with hairspray, and pin it over to the other side; let the rest of the bangs fall over to hide the pin—it creates a pretty, sloping angle.
