FABB Speaker Spotlight: Bri Emery of DesignLoveFest
FABB West took Los Angeles by storm. Check back often, because we'll be bringing you the latest news and updates from the world of FABB as we gear up for September 2012 FABB in NYC.
For the first time in FABB history, we hosted several breakout sessions at the April 30 conference so that our bloggers could learn about topics ranging from website design and newsletters to styling and SEO. In addition to her role as panelist on the “Stay True to Your Voice” panel, Bri Emery, founder of DesignLoveFest, also led a session on how to make your blog stand apart from the crowd.
Bri, who set up shop in the House of Zappos, treated the fashion and beauty bloggers to a fantastic presentation that hit on points like customizing your blog’s design, taking advantage of branding opportunities, and how to make a great impression on readers and clients.
Want to learn more from the design expert? Head on over to DesignLoveFest, where Bri recapped her FABB West session! She even included her presentation slides so you can get the same great info our attendees received!
We chatted even more with Bri about how she got her start, and where she finds inspiration.
Lucky: Tell us about your blog, DesignLoveFest. Why did you start blogging?
Bri Emery: I still remember the day I started my little blog. I was at a job that was giving me no creative voice, and I was totally miserable. Ever since I was young, I have been sort of a "life documenter", carrying around a journal wherever I go. Blogging became an incredible place for me to find inspiration during a dark time in my life, and now is a place where I can provide my readers with fun interesting content of my own. It's also a place where I can combine my love for graphic design and blogging.
DesignLoveFest is where type and images totally make out.
What are your blogging necessities?
A few things that keep DesignLoveFest running smoothly: a MacBook Pro laptop (and iMac desktop), Wacom pen for drawing on my photos, Adobe Photoshop for design layouts, my iPhone for social media, a couple photographer friends, a boyfriend with some video editing skills, and a whole lotta time!
The annual September FABB is held in New York. What do you think differentiates California from NYC in terms of fashion and beauty?
Every time I visit NYC, there is a cool factor that I pick up on. The clothes are little edgier and more timeless. the girls definitely rock their basics in NYC. when I look around LA, I see bright colors and patterns everywhere. I think LA is a sucker for trendy, too.
As a blogger, why is having a forum like FABB important to the industry?
It's definitely empowering to hear other women with a passion for blogging. In a less than ideal economy, I think it's really wonderful to see people making it work in unconventional ways!
What did you discuss at FABB West?
I spoke about "Staying True to Your Voice." This is something I take very serious with my brand and was glad I could share a few tips about it. I also held a session on Branding Your Blog. There is so much more that goes into a blog than just posting pretty photos, especially if you look at blogging as a career. From invoices to media kits...every detail needs to be thought about!
What are some of your favorite blogs to read?
Miss Moss, Oh Joy!, Oh Happy Day, sfgirlbybay, wit + delight and The Beauty Department.
