FABB Video: Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka and Janie Bryant
FABB West took Los Angeles by storm. Check back often, because we'll be bringing you the latest news and updates from the world of FABB as we gear up for September 2012 FABB in NYC.
One of our favorite moments at FABB West was being treated to a conversation with Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka and the series' costume designer Janie Bryant. The ladies chatted with Lucky’s Executive Fashion Director Alexis Bryan Morgan about the show and their own fashion tastes.
Kiernan, 12, who plays Sally Draper, is quite the budding fashionista. “Just working on Mad Men has inspired me to go out vintage shopping,” she said. What does she look for? “I love vintage barrettes and hats!”
When she’s not shopping for vintage items, Lucky's recent Eight Days of Outfits girl told the audience about her more modern tastes. “I have to say, Oscar de la Renta just released a children’s line that I really love and I was able to take a little sneak peek at their fall collection and that’s really great as well! And I recently got into yoga, so I’m a little obsessed with Lululemon.”
But she’s not always choosing looks off the rack. Perhaps inspired by Janie, Kiernan designs her own dresses, too! “I’ve designed three dresses so far and two I’ve had to give away. By the time I sketch them and actually go downtown and get the fabrics and have them made, I’ve grown out of them which is really sad. I tried on the dress that I’ve been designing for so long and it didn’t zip and it was really depressing! I just couldn’t part with one of them because it’s so pretty...so it’s in my closet, just hanging there.”
Janie, the Emmy-Award-winning designer who’s responsible for the phenomenal costumes on Mad Men, shared some of her favorite pieces from the show including the “Zou Bisou Bisou” dress Megan Draper wore while performing at Don’s surprise birthday party. Bloggers agreed.
While discussing Sally Draper’s look this season, Janie described the serious detail that goes into the looks and colors. “Sally Draper’s color palette is in contrast to Betty, and that is to illustrate the contrast in their characters and also the rebellious nature of her character.”
Janie also talked about her latest collaborations. We all own pieces from her Mad Men Collections for Banana Republic and now she just launched a collection with Maidenform for their 90th anniversary. The pieces of shapewear are all vintage-inspired and really pretty. Janie also teamed up with Downy Wrinkle Releaser to create a fabric care guide which you can download here.
“I don’t know about ya’ll but I’m a terrible ironer and I hate doing it, so the wrinkle releaser is amazing because you can just spritz it on and smooth out all of the wrinkles,” she said. Even Lucky’s own Alexis Bryan Morgan is a fan of the product, chiming in that it was a real timesaver during her recent trip to Europe.
