Crazy-Wavy Hair Trick

1002_mousse

I write about hair, but am hideously terrible at styling my own. My blowouts are poofy; I singe my ears with flatirons; and I simply cannot use a curling iron. Needless to say, I rock a lot of ponytails.

But the other night, I tried something new: I combed mousse (Tresemm??) through my hair, blowdried just the roots for two minutes, and then braided my still-damp hair into 10 little braids (I bore a temporary striking resemblance to popular mid-'90s rapper Coolio, but it was worth it in the end).

The next morning I unraveled and had the most crazy-awesome wildly wavy hair EVER! It almost looked crimped—in a good way—and it lasted for two days in a row (I'm convinced this is because of the mousse).

I'm usually pretty decent at this whole girl thing....
I can create a flawless smoky eye in between sips of morning coffee (and yes I rock a smoky eye during the day- life is short, be sexy), tight line my eyes while driving, and perfectly accessorize any outfit from the random contents of an enormous tote in the back seat of my car... but ask me to do something with my hair other than my standard disheveled rocker chic look and I start to panic (and begin weighing the merits of a Demi Moore circa GI Jane 'do)
Idiot proof barbie dream hair?? You just may be my person savior ;)

Mousse is so 80s but I also think it's been given a bad rap. It can be useful in certain situations and in small doses. I've got fine hair and a chin-length bob with bangs; a little bit of cheapo Suave Extra Hold Styling Mousse (available at Target) is great for letting me style my hair without weighing it down with gel or cream which is way too heavy for my hair. And although it's immodest for me to mention, I regularly have strangers stop to tell me they love my hair, so I must be doing something right!

I live by the braid for put together looking hair. Two french braids work quite well when worn over night and then taken out the next morning.

I too an incapable with styling my hair. So bad that I kill my poor hair by blow drying it into a mess and then having to flat iron it into something reasonable.

I never touch the curling iron.
