Lip Balm Ultimate Challenge!

In the winter, no balm ever seems to work for me, not ever. Every time I find a new one, I start out thinking, "This is it! This is IT. This is LOVE!" and then things go south. I have a little army of failed options lined up in front of my keyboard; they're looking at me sadly as I write this.

This is what I want:

1) No taste. No menthol, no cherry (I have bad memories of a cherry Chapstick-wearing smoker), no vanilla pecan pie. I want the taste of nothing.
2) A squeeze tube. I find lip balm pots creepy.
3) No tint. I have about six million colored glosses and lipsticks hanging out in the bottom of my bag, where they stay.
4) A formula that lasts for more than 30 minutes in winter. I want to apply every five or six hours, tops. Ideally, the balm will also do its damn job, and actually fix my lips. That's the point, no? That you use it, it works, and then your lips are back to their normal, happy lip state again?

I'm dying for leads—anything. Thank you.

I'm a fan of Jack Black's Lemon & Chamomile Lip Balm. The flavor is incredibly subtle, and it really changed the health of my lips. The trick is to apply it once liberally before bed. When you wake up your lips will be moisturized, and they will stay that way throughout the day (no re-application is even necessary)!

I've been using Aquaphor for years. It's the best choice for lip balm ever (especially in the colder months). Although it comes in a bigger tube since it's intended for the entire body, they make a travel size, which is perfect...and cheap.

Posted December 16, 2008 12:31 AM by sinse618

I LOVE Aquaphor by eucerin. You can get two squeeze tubes for around $6. It is a miracle. I haven't had chapped lips yet this season. Plus you can use it on your elbows and knees as well.

My new Holy Grail lip balm is Nivea's A Kiss of Moisture Essential Lip Care, It's not a squeezy tube, but it's not a pot, so I thought you might consider it. I think it is PERFECTION!

Posted December 16, 2008 12:36 AM by KimmyDarling

Philosophy Kiss Me clear is my fave, but there's a slight flavor to it. I wonder about the Nivea...I have the stick and it's not bad, but there is a squeeze tube kind available.

Posted December 16, 2008 2:38 AM by nouggsforme

i have the nivea, and i agree that it's good. i'm out of rosebud salve, and i know it's a stick-your-finger-in-it situation, but it's great to slather on at night.

but i think i'll go buy aquaphor today -- my lips are a nightmare!

Vaseline Lip Therapy - it's clear, no scent and in a squeeze tube. It's my go to for dry winter lips.

AQUAPHOR--I'm convinced it's the only thing that works!

Posted December 16, 2008 8:23 AM by luckyshopgirl

I join the chorus of aquaphor!!

Posted December 16, 2008 9:48 AM by hjk4

I always have Aquaphor around, and use it day and night (diapers.com sends those little tubes free, so I'm well stocked), but I like Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Lip Balm. It violates the no-smell rule, but I feel like it's working when I can smell it. Weleda Everon is good too.

Posted December 16, 2008 10:02 AM by ekechic

I second vaseline's lip therapy, it's a bit thicker than plain vaseline so the lasting power is better. I think my tube had a bit of a scent, but if it did it was an incredibly mild medicinal, not-too-foody vanilla.

Posted December 16, 2008 10:06 AM by aletab

Try Skyn Iceland Angelica Lip Repair, or Juice Beauty Organic Lip Moisturizer (orange/vanilla flavor though). They contain no pertrolatum or mineral oil which are good to avoid.

When I took Accutane back in the day, I did a lot of research on lip balms, and found two that I still use: Philosophy Kiss Me (available in a tube) and Aveda's Lip Saver. Both don't have petroleum as the first ingredient, and load up on moisturizing oils. All petroleum-based balms do is block moisture loss. Ones with oils and/or lanolin add moisture back in, making for a much less chapped experience.

I support Aquaphor.

Posted December 16, 2008 10:42 AM by bengalspice

Burt's Bees (original formula) has always worked for me!

Posted December 16, 2008 10:51 AM by virgiez

i'm a rosebud salve junkie, myself. but i understand the whole finger-in-the-pot thing.
avon has a moisture therapy lip balm in a tube that is clear and unscented and i've been using that since i was 4 (my mom's THE avon lady in this neck of the woods) it's pretty cheap--especially around the holidays.
but you guys are making me wanna run out and get aquaphor...just to see.

Posted December 16, 2008 11:04 AM by loudserenity

I like Aquaphor too, but for me, the best is Lorac Vitamin E Stick. The. Best. Ever.

Posted December 16, 2008 11:09 AM by mamidon

Aquaphor!!!!!....it's the only way to go!!! Clear, no taste, no smell, in a tube and it works!

Posted December 16, 2008 11:14 AM by beautyameye

Definitely Murad lip care is the best. I also don't like lip gloss pots and the winter is my mouths mortal enemy - I don't think I could survive without this.

Weleda Everon balm is the bomb! Hehe...although it's not in a squeeze tube, it's in a handy roll-up tube (like lipstick) instead. It's all natural, and hugs my lips like no other balm ever could.

I completely love Neutrogena's Lip Moisturizer. It's unscented, and while it's not in a squeezy tube, it is in a tube. It doesn't feel THAT moisturizing when you put it on (it's really light feeling) but it keeps my lips soft for hours and I never seem to get super tight lips when I'm using it, unlike just about every other lip balm I've tried.

Unfortunately I have been cursed with severe chapped lips. I'm talking bleeding & peeling on a daily basis. I even got to experience a blood blister for the first time ever this season. (Thankfully I have a husband who loves me despite my misfortune. Blistex Fruit Smoothies aren't cutting it. In the past I had fabulous results with Fresh's Sugar Lip Treatment. But I think I'm going to pick up some Aquaphor tonight! Can you buy it in a drugstore?

Posted December 16, 2008 1:57 PM by mcallahan

I also love the Neutrigena Lip Moisturizer. It has totally changed my lips for the better...they are way softer and more even looking.

CLINIQUE SUPER BALM IS BY FAR THE VERY BEST I HAVE EVER TRIED. NO TASTE NOT TO STICKY, COMES IN CLEAR AND SUBTLE TINTS WHICH I PERSONALLY LIKE. KEEPS LIPS MOIST AND COMFORTABLE AND IS PRETTY CHEAP IN COMPARISON TO SOME OF THE DEPT. STORE BRANDS. ONE TUBE LASTS A WHILE, NO WAND NO MESS APPLY IN THE DARK AND YOU ARE GOOD TO GO.

I read somewhere (here?) that the combination between lipbalm and saline was the miracle cure. Also, balsam poplar balm by Alpenglow skincare is miraculous, though it comes in a pot:

Aveda's Lip Saver is FANTASTIC. It IS scented - that lovely Aveda scent - but has no taste. And it's SPF 15. The other option for super chapped lips is Fresh's Sugar Lip Treatment. It's pricey but phenomonal.

Posted December 16, 2008 5:58 PM by arg13810

I agree that Aquaphor and Clinique SuperBalm are great products.

I would also suggest Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant stick--it's not tinted and works SO well. Also has SPF 15. Elizabetharden.com has this cute little retro-looking set:

I have used the aquaphor for years (my derm keeps the small tubes in a big jar in his office like candy) but I like Laura Mercier Lip Balm in the squeeze tube because it is less greasy, and stays on longer. I would suggest that for the most serious approach. And of course, drinking a lot of water, which I am sure you have already heard from yourself and many other people.

Posted December 16, 2008 7:16 PM by Loho04

aquaphor is the only thing that i know that meets your criteria and they come in the a lip balm size too now, pack of 2...

my other faves which are not not flavorless though it's not fruity or anything...they're also solid but in lip stick form so not balm pot form:

carmex (original flavor) - also available in tube form if you prefer.

fresh sugar lip balm

kiehl's!

Caudalie is very moisterizing and in a chapstick container.

I've always used Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula hand cream in the winter. All the girl's championing Aquaphor might have perfected it though, as Neutrogena has a taste... not a flavor, it just tastes like itself.

It was in a pot and mentholly, but Victoria's secret used to make a night balm called Balmy Nights (now beauty rush?) that I SWORE by. Dead skin just fell off in the morning shower and lips were so soft.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the Aquaphor and classic Kiehl's as the no nonsense super lip balms, the thing that has been the best lip balm for my lips was recommended to me by a facialist at the Fairmont in Scottsdale - she recommended that I try Lansinoh - the same balm that nursing women use - I skeptically tried it one night before bed, and had never seen my lips looking so full and smooth and moisturized - I love it, but the one drawback is it is not portable, and it looks weird when my childless self whips out the nursing mom nipple balm from my purse - so I'm a strawberry Carmex girl during the da

Posted December 16, 2008 11:25 PM by vivalucky

i used the lansinoh when i got my nipples pierced, and one day on a whim decided to put some on my chapped lips. it works.

this has to be the best answer to fill your criteria:

VASELINE LIP THERAPY!!

Burt's Bees in the tube (I also hate the pots!). It comes in original (minty smell, tingly, but no taste), honey, or pomegranate.

Posted December 17, 2008 10:10 AM by Millee

Burt's Bees - either the medicated one or the lifeguard one

Also, when my lips are gross and cracking the only thing that REALLY heals them is Neosporin Lip Treatment

That's an easy one! MALIN + GOETZ makes an excellent lip balm. It's fragrance-free, packaged in a little squeeze tube, and stays in place for a nice long time. Good luck!

Posted December 17, 2008 12:25 PM by JessicaNST

DUDE. GUYS. I know I still have a TON to try out, but I must let you know: I got the Aquaphor this morning! And no reapplication needed yet--and it's 4 hours, and counting!

Posted December 17, 2008 2:32 PM by Cristina_at_Lucky

You have to try Face Boutique: Moi Moi Lip Remedy. I cannot possibly recommend this enough, for several reasons:
1)The packaging is cute & artsy and comes in the aforementioned santiary squeeze tube.
2)A little dollop goes a long way. Case in point: I applied a tad at 8:00 this morning and have not needed to reapply since.
3Because it is a treatment (not just a gloss) it cures "winter lips."
4)It's natural, with slight scent simply because of the moisturizing oils.
5)$12.00 is pretty reasonable for how long it lasts and what it does.

My boyfriend uses Kiehl's and it's the first thing that came to mind after reading your list of criteria. I think it might just do the trick!

Posted December 18, 2008 11:59 AM by xandra

I agree with Avon's Moisture Therapy lip balm. It's completely unflavored and tastes like nothing but makes my lips so smooth. I also use Bert's Bees lip balm because sometimes I like the tingly feeling but it doesn't have any flavor. I actually use the tin but just rub it on right from the container. Sounds weird I know, but it's easy. I just rub it right on my lips without using my fingers. My sister turned me onto it since using your fingers to apply lip balm in public is disgusting to me,and now my friends do it too. Some pots are too deep but Bert's Bees is nice and shallow so you can do it.

You have to try kiehls lip balm #1, it comes in both a pot (which i use after the shower and before bed) and in a tube-it follows all of ur criteria and is the best lip balm i have ever tried- i travel all over the world and always make sure i have a couple of those with me! its amazing.

Posted December 20, 2008 2:31 AM by lobrien

keihl's. seriously the best. lasts for hours and people always ask me what lip gloss i'm wearing.

the best.

Posted December 22, 2008 8:39 PM by atmasciarotte

Dr. Hauschka. I have been using it for years and panic if I don't have a tube on me at all times. No flavor or plumping or anything obnoxious. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

AQUAPHOR!!!!!!

Posted December 23, 2008 5:09 PM by RaySiegel

My personal favorite which i discovered last year is the Ses natura protective lip balm, from sesderma. It does not have any flavour, comes in a tube, and does wonders for your lips. Moisturizes, heals, prevents cracking and peeling, and also has spf 15 (for those skiers out there).
-contains aloe gel, mandelic acid, alfa bisabol, and vitamin e... It is also the most expensive lip balm ive ever tried, but works like nothing ive ever tried before.

Chapstick Overnight.
I have seriously chapped lips all the time during the winter...I use it all the time.
