Kate Moss as Hair Inspiration

Kate Moss AD.jpgFrom: Jen Ford
To: Jean Godfrey-June
Subject: ...

... Just found this old shot of Kate Moss. Doesn’t her hair remind you of a LADY’s take on the Alice Dellal shaving-the-side-of-your-head super-scary trend? Just do a deep side part and tuck your hair behind your ears — so much simpler...?

The Fashion-Editor Frizz Solution!

frizz_image0908.jpg
In the humidity my poker straight hair becomes a crazy, wavy, frizz ball. I have tried every anti frizz product out there and have to say, I am obsessing over No Frizz Styling Spray from Living Proof. It is the only anti-frizz product that I’ve found that really tames the frizz without becoming greasy.

The Best Flatiron Ever?

GHD.jpgThe two adjectives that best describe my hair are "lank" and "spiritless;" thus, I've never had occasion to truly test-run a flatiron. But I now have new information from not one, but TWO reliable, independent sources, both lifelong flatironers: Of all the irons in the land, the GHD iron is the very, very best. It works better than anything else for both straightening and curling, they say, and it heats up in, like, 2 seconds; that said, it is not cheap ($225)—but neither person regrets the investment. So: Are my sources correct? Are they spending foolishly or styling wisely? WHAT IS THE BEST FLATIRON EVER?

Hair Pros Obsessed by Keratin Treatments!

Fashion director Hope Greenberg is not the only new convert. I have overheard—at not one but several—top, top, super A-list salons this week as the A-list stylists, their associates, and and their assistants all clamor for keratin treatments—for themselves. I even heard one turning down an appointment with a client in order to schedule her own treatment as quickly as possible.

Deep Conditioner Challenge!

200.jpgmoisturize_mud_masksm.jpg
Yesterday our editor-in-chief Kim France came over to the beauty department and challenged each of us to find her THE best deep conditioner. A few candidates popped into my head right away (the fantastic L'oreal Professional Absolut Repair Masque and my beloved Aestelance Mud Mask, for example), but I need more time to think. In the meantime, which ONE deep conditioner gets your vote?

Hair conversion part 2--the hair I always wanted

When I was young, my best friend Holly had silky blonde hair that fell straight down her back. After a shower or out of the pool, she would run a comb through it and it would dry in a perfect, shiny mane. I, on the other hand, had a long shag that, without careful tending by my mother, stuck out in 10 directions. I coveted Holly’s hair--and the hair of all girls I’ve known since who have been able to towel-dry and run out of the house.

Summer Hair Question: Russell Brand v. Martha Stewart?

2009_07_marthaandrussell.jpg
The line between artfully unkempt and deranged is. . .slim. Especially if the outfit you’re wearing involves linen. I tend to err on the side of Russell. The side of the decidedly unprofessional. Which has me in a bit of a panic today. If I’m wearing something with a tendency to wrinkle, do I need to whip out the blow-dryer?

Haircut Conversion!

My past 2 haircuts have come from a hair genius (you know, one of those people who runs his hands through your hair for 2 seconds and you’re sure he gets exactly what your hair is about and knows what to do to make it look great) at The John Sahag Workshop, aptly named Valentino. I’ve spent years searching for someone to give me a cut that would take enough weight out to reduce the frizz and puff (especially in the summer) but not chop into it so much that I was left with split ends and ultimately, more frizz. At my first appointment, when Valentino told me he was going to cut my hair dry, a light bulb went off: Why don’t more stylists do this? It makes total sense. As he’s cutting, he can see what it will look like dry—the way most people walk around —and adjust accordingly. He uses a flat iron to make it as smooth as glass and then deftly cuts a small section at a time, layer by layer, with the precision of Edward Scissorhands. The result is that my hair has never looked healthier or been easier to style on my own. I’m a convert to both Valentino and the dry cut. He has convinced me that I am a perfect candidate for a Keratin conditioning treatment (not straightening but a 2 1/2 hour process he swears will leave me nearly frizz-free for 3-4 months). I’m going back to see him next week to try it. Stay tuned...

MY HAIR VS. THE RAIN

UMI dfuse.jpgAs noted on this blog, it’s been raining for weeks here in New York, which means my hair is doing the exact opposite of what I want it to do.  The solution: this lightweight serum from UMI.  The tiniest drop has the effect of a shine spray, hairspray, and a full-on frizz-fighting serum all in one, without the stickiness at all. It’s working for me right now, but of course I'm dying to know your solutions--please!

HAIR ADVICE, PLEASE

Anyone who reads this blog knows that I have the thick, untamable, hugely-snarled-and-dreadlock-prone hair of your average feral child. Unless I have truly just stepped out of a salon, I never look as though I just stepped out of the salon; even then, hours later, I look like I've just stepped out my abandoned doghouse in eastern Europe, possibly to play Ultimate Frisbee in a Phish concert parking lot.

SO. I want to hear about all of the amazing, sleekifying, detangling, super-softening hair products that you're obsessed with. What REALLY works for you?
