Sneak Preview Today--When it Sells Out: Covergirl LashBlastLength!

CoverGirl LashBlastLength.jpgWe in the beauty department are rabid, fanatical proponents of the Covergirl mascaras—Lash Exact, VolumeExact, LashBlast—and await the release of new iterations the way Twihards anticipate New Moon. The latest, LashBlastLength,* doesn't actually roll into drugstores until September, but for a limited time starting today, they can be bought here.

*Not a half hour after I put it on, another beauty editor accosted me at an event: "Tell me. You got extensions, didn't you. Tell me the TRUTH."

Question: What's the all-time best-smelling lipstick?

2009_08_bestsmellinglipstick.jpgPerfumers rhapsodize about the smell of lipstick—and I do love love love Lipstick Rose, the perfume from Frederic Malle. My very favorite actual-lipstick scent is actually a tie: L’Oreal and Guerlain. Am I right or am I right?

Amazing eyeliner/shadow hybrid from Mally Beauty!

2009_08_mally.jpgSpeaking of Ms. Roncal, the reason it occurred to me to ask her to guest-blog in the first place was because I've been obsessing over her Evercolor Shadow Stick, which is incredibly long-wearing (she calls it her "tattoo in a stick") and acts like primer, eye shadow, eyeliner and a brush all in one (and you know I know good eye makeup). For day, I just run the shadow stick like normal eyeliner; to smoke it up, I use my finger to blur the line. Once the shadow sets, it'll be there until you decide to take it off. Seriously.

Amazzzzing. Has anyone else tried it or another Mally Beauty item?

Cindy Crawford Maps Out Her Makeup

jennifer scurby.jpgThe brilliant Sonia Kashuk, Cindy Crawford's longtime makeup artist, devised the idea of planning a week's worth of makeup looks in advance when she was on a trip with Crawford long ago. For every new outfit Cindy changed into during the week, they mapped out a different effect: Friday night: smoky eye + nude lip. Saturday night: black liner just along the inside of the lower lid + pink lipgloss; Sunday: a pale, shimmery eye + matte red lips, etc. Like Lucky's "A Month of Outfits": a nice, smart way to get the most mileage from your cosmetics bag and to stay out of a rut.

I love this idea. Commenters: What's your ideal week?

Which makeup shade would you choose for your walls?

tarte.jpgThere’s a book about a glamorous British duchess who insisted on having her living room painted to match her face powder. I love that she thought of this--it's very Blanche-DuBois-tutorial--in how to establish a flattering backdrop for yourself. Then, surfing the Apple site, I found is free Benjamin Moore iPhone app that lets you take a picture of anything and promptly get an exact match from their over 3,500 paint colors.

If you find a beautiful shade in your makeup bag, you can now live in it--a cheap, glamorous, and totally personal touch. Chanel eye shadow in Amethyst? Or Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Nude? My veteran decorator friend Schuyler votes for a bright watermelon pink like Tarte Cheek Stain in True Love, which she just used in a powder room for one of her Hollywood clients.

What do you think? Which cosmetic color would you turn into a paint?

On the hunt for: Gosh Cosmetics

Gosh cosmetics.jpgReader ersatzkat in our comments section:

"I found a drugstore brand called Gosh while vacationing in Dublin this spring--lovely eyeliners, not super-cheap but reasonable and cool colors."

... And I was off: It's a well-documented fact that I love a foreign beauty product, and so I fell into a rabbit hole of Web searching and learned that the line is actually Danish and makes all manner of awesomely unsmudgeable eyeliners (among MANY other things—nail polish, blush, primer, etc.). Even better, there's a North America website, with e-commerce: Word on the street (the Makeup Alley Street) is that the Velvet Touch waterproof liner is killer. Ten bucks—not bad.

So, readers: Any other Gosh* favorites?

*Simone speculates that perhaps the Danes pronounce it "Gauche"?

The perfect neutral eyeshadow palette

2009_07_wetandwild.jpgWet n Wild is one of my very favorite cosmetic brands—is anyone else with me? And it's not just because their products are so awesomely inexpensive: The makeup is excellent quality, particularly the eye shadows (both powder and cream) and any of their several face-luminizing products. Right now I’m into the Ultimate Expressions Eyeshadow Palette in Sand Castle, which is a set of 8 incredible neutrals—they're sort of all you need, right? So fantastic for day, obviously, but night-time too: lately I’ve been doing a chocolate-y, dark brown smoky eye instead of my usual black (speaking of which, this $4 liner from last week would complete the look perfectly, no?).

Lipstick Naming Contest!

Like Jackson Pollack, professional namers-of-cosmetics have to contend with a great deal of “I could do that!” attitude from the outside world. If you yourself hold such attitudes, Lancome and Chris Benz are giving you the chance to show your stuff: there’s a contest to name a new lipstick shade inspired by the designer’s Spring 2010 collection. The winner gets five of said lipsticks, plus a $500 Lancome gift certificate. To enter post suggestions on Chris’ Facebook fan page. Deadline: Sunday, July 12th, at 5 p.m. EST.

Extra credit non-beauty question: How do we feel about fan pages in general? I myself resent when I am urged to join one—I feel like the very definition of “fan” means you shouldn’t need encouragement to sign up. But perhaps I’m splitting hairs? Please weigh in!
