Etsy: '90s grunge styles that actually fit

il_430xN.76881592.jpg
il_430xN.76879970.jpgGrunge was the look when I was in college and, while I clumsily rocked flannel and oversized blazers and Docs and men's undershirts and cutoffs (sometimes altogether), my biggest problem with the clothes was how they swallowed you whole and/or made you look bigger than you were. It's a little more than 15 years later, and grunge is totally back, but, this time, designers are smartly adding more femininity and refinement to the trend, especially when it comes to fit.

il_430xN.76880687.jpgTake, for example, the custom-made, '90s-esque collection by Little Bird Designs, a California-based Etsy shop which sells floral, plaid, and chiffon items that retain the spirit of the era, but--since they're sewn to your exact measurements--are stylishly updated for 2009. I love its checked jumpsuit, ruffled floral dress, and you-choose-the-color high-waisted plaid skirt. Best of all are the time-warp prices: most of the pieces are less than 50 bucks.

Yellow sundresses seen in a new light

279866842_tp.jpg
Thumbnail image for A-12-10-112.jpgI'm weirdly reading an advanced copy of American On Purpose, an autobiography by Craig Ferguson (you know him, he's the Scottish, hot-for-an-older-dude, late night host who's on after Letterman). In it, he tells all sorts of stories about life in '70s Scotland, and what it was like to live (and drink a lot) in the East Village of New York City in the '80s. So far, however, the detail that has struck me the most is when Ferguson describes meeting his future wife for the first time and how she was wearing a yellow, '50s-style dress that made her look ultra-sexy and "terminally hip." I'd never thought about yellow nor '50s-style dresses in quite that way, but today when I searched  on eBay, I could see what he meant. Paired with red lipstick and neat, pretty hair; these could make one appear flirty and kittenish in a very Heather-Graham-at-the-end-of-Swingers way (a movie which, outdated lines or no, I still consider a masterpiece).

Etsy: Seaweed art is so much more beautiful than you'd think

il_430xN.59070225.jpgil_430xN.53369652.jpgI don't know what's come over me, but I have become completely obsessed with everything from Alga Net, an Etsy store that uses over 150  species of algae, seaweed and kelp to create delicate, ethereal, just really pretty works of art.

Check it out: I'm thinking these could be unique additions to all kinds of rooms, and, going along with what we talked about last week, they could also make great, affordable gifts. (Or, wait. Would it be weird to give someone framed seaweed as a present? I guess it depends on the friend. Some people I know would definitely dig this a lot.)

The shoes that all the cool girls are wearing

278821634_tp.jpg
OK. I have no idea if that's really true, but, recently, I'vewc41_1.jpg seen three stylish, hipsterish women wearing low-heeled, vintage-looking peep-toes and I have thought, "Now, those are the summer shoes for me." Think about it: They're dressy enough for pencil skirts, casual enough for shorts, feminine, classic and they're absolutely comfortable Thumbnail image for !BU4gCp!CGk~$(KGrHgoH-DYEjlLl5L7,BKPuyGBhG!~~_2.JPG.jpegtoo. Plus, you can get them now on eBay for super, super cheap. I found them in bright red, navy, maroon, and this earthy, extra-versatile light brown, which, if I found in my size, I would snap up quick.

If Beavis and Butt-Head talked about skirts

il_430xN.68981140.jpg
il_430xN.72786803.jpgNot too long ago, my friend Valerie and I were lamenting the lack of skirts in the world. The conversation went something like this:

V: "Why can't I ever find skirts?"
J: "I don't know. But skirts are cool."
V: "Yeah, skirts are cool. It sucks that we can't ever find skirts. Every store has tons of dresses and maybe two skirts."
J: "I know. Dresses don't suck, but I'd like some cool skirts. God! Where are all the skirts?!"

It was perhaps the dumbest exchange we've ever had, but the sentiment behind it was true: In the past few years, designers have been fixated on pants and dresses, making a great skirt harder and harder to find. However, I may have solved the problem. Today on Etsy, I found at least five Alex & Ra styles that I really need to own, wear with wedges and a pretty tank and feel like a very sexy (heh, henh, henh, henh) lady indeed.

Red Dress Shoppe=retro-inspired wonderland

BonneBelle6.jpg
MemphisBlue2.JPG.jpegThere are many reasons why having a curvy, healthy body is awesome. Buying clothes is not always one of them. Tops won't button over boobs, your butt eats your skirts, and skinny jeans lend a sort of poofy-at-the-top, ostrich-ian effect. This is why I love stores like the Red Dress Shoppe, which offer loads of affordable, ladylike, retro-inspired styles that will actually fit your real, not-starving-yourself shape. Today, I'm totally loving its '30s and '40s dresses, which look at once summery, feminine, and vampy in a Black Dahlia sort of way.

The perfect wedding present

Thumbnail image for il_430xN.75811236.jpg
il_430xN.76087082.jpgA few Christmases ago, I was totally stumped over what to give my husband. I think I'd bought him some lame utility item like socks and I wanted to supplement with something else "special." This is when I came across artist Ashley Goldberg. I bought one of her prints on Etsy, You Make Me Happy, which features two monsters touching hands and smiling at each other nervously. It was a huge hit, is now hanging in our bathroom, and it makes me think about how much I love my husband every time I brush my teeth.

il_430xN.75811169.jpgI tell you this dorky/sappy story because it's wedding season and the Ashley G Etsy store has tons of graphic, interesting, beautiful prints on sale now and they're all super affordable and great for gifts. Specifically, she's started creating custom portraits of couples, from photos, which (with a cool frame) could be the perfect wedding present*, something unique and thoughtful, that will maybe make your friends remember why they love each other for years.

*I kind of lied there. The perfect wedding present is the red Le Creuset pot Emily gave me, but this could come pretty close.

An exclusive Norma Kamali swimwear line...only on eBay!

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for !BURPJ0!B2k~$(KGrHgoH-EUEjlLlu)UgBKMpK,HWlg~~_2.JPGSomeday, the weather will cooperate and start behaving like its sunny, hot, pleasant summer best. When that day comes, you will want a bathing suit. And, perhaps, the bathing suit you will want is sexy and retro and will hide the lumpy bits while simultaneously making you look like a pinup queen? Well, you can find exactly this at Norma Kamali's new eBay shop which has loads of exclusive, unused swimwear styles at 55 percent off their original prices. The options--which range from ruched, low-cut, one pieces to cheetah-print bikinis (rowr!)--aren't cheap, but they're the kinds of pieces that will last, which means you won't have to think about bathing suits until the next time hell a little bit freezes over and it's April in June.

*Oh, and, before you buy, definitely check out Lucky's Best Bathing Suit for Your Shape guide for pointers on, well, you know.

It's Wednesday and I've fallen in love with some jewelry.

il_430xN.70764129.jpg
il_430xN.65567685.jpgEvery once in a while, I come across a designer who I feel like I "get," someone whose lightheartedness and sense of play somehow translate to their work and, because of this, I feel completely inspired to own everything they make. This is the way I feel about the jewelry from the Etsy store Make Pie Not War. It's created by a woman named Alana, who titles herThumbnail image for il_430xN.67247080.jpg delicate, affordable necklaces, earrings and bracelets with fun names like If Vegas Was In Heaven. Today, I'm particularly insane over three of her necklaces: Crystal Goodness, Miami Vice Has A Girlfriend (heh) and, my favorite piece of all, a brass horseshoe locket called Luck of the Derby ($25!).

How often do you fail with online vintage?

Thumbnail image for 633772890298313750-44-G.jpgI do approximately 85 percent of my shopping online, mostly with vintage stuff. This is not only because I'm amazingly lazy (editor-in-chief Kim France once referred to me as a slug and she was not wrong), but because there's a vast and interesting fashion inventory available on the Web that I can't always find on land. However, we all know this kind of shopping has its risks--items are one of a kind and usually not returnable, and if something doesn't work, you're basically stuck. For example, I would very very much like to own this awesome-looking jumpsuit (from my favorite online vintage shop, The Urban Collection), but it has the potential to be a colossal fail. Though knowing my measurements helps, there's a very real chance that it could make me look like a Goth, sausaged Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie. How often do you take these gambles? And how often do you fail? (I'm about 5:1, successes vs. epic disasters, btw.)
