Etsy: On cats and pretty clutches

il_430xN.74474659.jpgil_430xN.71745167.jpgFile under "Working from home is weird/Things so embarrassing I should die": There's this DVD called Video Catnip which I play during the day for my cats when they are being insane, distracting, (literally) bouncing-off-the-wall freaks. It's super low-budget and features continuous footage of squirrels and birds frolicking in grass, eating nuts, flying--you know, animal stuff--all set to a chirpy, windy, Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for il_430xN.73413831.jpgnature soundtrack. It is possibly the most soothing piece of footage ever recorded and makes me want to own a country house RIGHT THIS SECOND. Anyway, today the three of us were sitting around chilling, half-watching a field full of sparrows looking for worms, when I came across these really beautiful, nature-inspired clutches on Etsy (blogging synchronicity, yeah!). They're made by a designer named Briana Edelman and they're sweet and feminine and old-fashioned, but not in a way that's at all cloying. I imagine carrying one to a bar with a billowy tank, jeans and sandals, or to some kind of ladylike garden party with a pretty dress. That is, if I ever pull myself away from Video Catnip and leave the house. Sigh.

Yellow sundresses seen in a new light

279866842_tp.jpg
Thumbnail image for A-12-10-112.jpgI'm weirdly reading an advanced copy of American On Purpose, an autobiography by Craig Ferguson (you know him, he's the Scottish, hot-for-an-older-dude, late night host who's on after Letterman). In it, he tells all sorts of stories about life in '70s Scotland, and what it was like to live (and drink a lot) in the East Village of New York City in the '80s. So far, however, the detail that has struck me the most is when Ferguson describes meeting his future wife for the first time and how she was wearing a yellow, '50s-style dress that made her look ultra-sexy and "terminally hip." I'd never thought about yellow nor '50s-style dresses in quite that way, but today when I searched  on eBay, I could see what he meant. Paired with red lipstick and neat, pretty hair; these could make one appear flirty and kittenish in a very Heather-Graham-at-the-end-of-Swingers way (a movie which, outdated lines or no, I still consider a masterpiece).

An exclusive Norma Kamali swimwear line...only on eBay!

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for !BURPJ0!B2k~$(KGrHgoH-EUEjlLlu)UgBKMpK,HWlg~~_2.JPGSomeday, the weather will cooperate and start behaving like its sunny, hot, pleasant summer best. When that day comes, you will want a bathing suit. And, perhaps, the bathing suit you will want is sexy and retro and will hide the lumpy bits while simultaneously making you look like a pinup queen? Well, you can find exactly this at Norma Kamali's new eBay shop which has loads of exclusive, unused swimwear styles at 55 percent off their original prices. The options--which range from ruched, low-cut, one pieces to cheetah-print bikinis (rowr!)--aren't cheap, but they're the kinds of pieces that will last, which means you won't have to think about bathing suits until the next time hell a little bit freezes over and it's April in June.

*Oh, and, before you buy, definitely check out Lucky's Best Bathing Suit for Your Shape guide for pointers on, well, you know.

Last thoughts on eBay Obsessed

3ea5_1.JPGIn an act of true gracelessness and horror, I wiped out on the streets of New York yesterday. I wasn't paying attention, was carrying too many things and dialing my phone at the same time and, all of a sudden, there I was, on my back, dress up, phone broken, bag emptied on the sidewalk. Your basic urban nightmare. But then a funny thing happened: The people around me helped; they gathered my things, they checked to see if I was OK and they got me on my feet. It made me remember everything that is actually good, kind and generous about humans. I bring all of this up to tell you that the woman who helped me the most, the real accident angel, looked like a young Sophia Loren (one of my style fixations). She was wearing a wiggle dress and some of the best vintage red heels I've ever seen (I found a verrry similar pair on eBay).
  99d6_2-1.JPG
I also bring all of this up because today marks the end of a little era. You may notice a new title on this blog. On Monday, I'll start living up to it. I'll be writing about all things Etsy and vintage and vintage-inspired (send me ideas! please!). There'll still be a bit of eBay, but it seems apt to end my truly eBay Obsessed days by obsessing over a nice woman with mad-inspiring style, all of which can be found on our favorite auction site.

On necklaces and "wacky-lady" style

273193958_tp.jpgI go through periods where I become a fashion rebel, but not in any cool way you'd imagine. It's more that I want to see how far I can push the limits of my clothes and accessories combinations without looking like I'm homeless or should be locked up like Girl, Interrupted (though at this point, I'm sad to say, I'd probably be Lady, Interrupted or Mid-thirties Woman-child, Interrupted. Sigh.) ANYWAY. This rebellion is currently translating to wacky necklaces. I've been wearing the painted shell necklace I bought for basically 75 cents in Buenos Aires, but I'd like to expand to some fun enamel styles, like this white beauty, or maybe a faceted '50s-dinner-party look like this red multi-strand choker, or explore even scarier territory with this coral and a lot-going-on piece from J.Crew. All of them would be perfect right now with a simple sundress and sandals, though to keep from being too Kathy Geiss from 30 Rock (remember her? Daughter of Jack's boss, married to Will Arnett, loves unicorns), I'd stay away from a loud print or orthopedic shoes.

Friday Web roundup: Celeb bags for a cause, museum-quality Pucci, and my war with skeeters

madonna-bag.jpg-Celebs like Madonna, Jen Aniston, Demi Moore and Marisa Tomei are auctioning their signed Ferragamo bags to benefit victims of the devastating earthquake in L' Aquila, Italy. You can see the entire list of stars and purses on eBay (I feel so sad that8352blackflirty2.jpg no one is bidding on Lily Tomlin's!) Source: Style Watch

-YOOX.com has curated a collection of vibrant, pristine vintage Pucci pieces for sale on its site. Though some of the stuff is way out of my price range, the slideshow is dizzyingly inspiring, and one of these pretty scarfs might just be worth a splurge.

-I'm newly in love with the retro-style dresses found on Unique Vintage--they range in price from $65 to $200 and most of the options are flattering to array of figures. I'm especially into this flirty '50s look (just $68!)

-And, finally, mosquito season has returned with a hella vengeance! Just last night, I was attacked on my lip and chin and, after a battle round of unconscious scratching, I awoke looking like I have acne and Herpes Simplex 1, which just seems unfair. Because I don't really want to wear bug spray to bed, I'm considering a glamorous mosquito net for my bed.

Friday Web roundup: Marilyn's clothes for sale, Chloe Sevigny's vintage rules, and magenta=huge

gal_monroe3.jpg-First Michael, now Marilyn: A selection of Ms. Monroe's clothes and personal effects will be auctioned next month in L.A. Which begs the question: Is it morbid to buy items of the dead? I know I'd be interested in MM's umbrella (left), but not so much the robe she wore when she died.

-We're just going to say it: We heart her style, but we fundamentally DISAGREE with Ms. Chloe "vintage footwear can be a little funky-in a bad way" Sevigny's vintage shopping habits. (Fashion Tribes)

-Magenta is the hot new color for fall! Woot! How girly and lovely! Seriously, think of the many eBay searches to come! (WSJ)

-And, last, Will Ferrell has launched a sunscreen line. It is being sold on eBay. All of this is very confusing.
