New style icon: Georgia Jagger

Picture 11.jpgPicture 14.jpg I've been staring at pictures of Georgia Jagger (daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, and focus of Lucky's April Inspiration Board) a little obsessively all day. She's the new face of Hudson Jeans, and though, since she's just 17 years old, some are complaining that her poses are too provocative, I'm into the campaign. More than that, I just LOVE young Georgia's entire look--from the messy hair, to the bright red lipstick, to the sophisticated take on punk, it's all right up my alley and super inspiring. Take this leather jacket/red dress/tie-up booties ensemble (find similar pieces here, here, and here). It's urban, feminine, and chic, but not too put together, which honestly describes every outfit I'd ever want to wear.

Dear Golden Vintage: Your store is awesome

il_430xN.74585266.jpgil_430xN.79163996.jpgIs there really anything better than stumbling upon an online store that's easy to navigate and sells everything you want? Well...I experienced this very phenomenon this morning when I started surfing through the Etsy boutique Dear Golden Vintage. I heart the taste of proprietor Lauren--she handpicks pretty, feminine, dreamy items that are from the past, but seem like they can and should totally fit into your life today. Most of the stuff for sale right now is in a soft, pastel palette that feels ladylike-romantic, but I also saw this bright wrap dress and these rainbow striped sandals (so Dazed and Confused-sexy, right?) that I really, deeply want to wear with boot-cut jeans and a simple white tank.

Are denim dresses ever OK?

Thumbnail image for LotImg224.jpg281659376_tp.jpgI keep hearing all of these positive stories (by fashion people I respect) about the coolness of denim dresses and I keep thinking, "No way, really?" I don't know why, but a one-piece jeans outfit fills me with a particular type of terror. It's as if I'd put one on and suddenly become back-in-the-day Britney and I'd look over at my husband and he'd be wearing head-to-toe stone wash, and it would all be scary, in a "Naughty Girls Need Love Too" 3405_1.jpgway. However, when I poke around a bit, 37479275.jpgand open my frightened little mind, I notice there are some very good-looking DDs to be had. Like this button-up style, which would be great with flat sandals, or this dark-wash jumper-ish look, which is '70s-Three's Company cute, or how about a corset version? Is that too 2001 Brit-Brit? I just don't know.

J'Adore....

274752679_o.jpg
Thumbnail image for fc5b_1_sbl.JPG.jpegThough I'm normally not much of a label person, I have a  huge soft spot for vintage designer accessories. I love old, even slightly beat up pieces by Gucci, YSL, sometimes Chanel, and especially Dior. They just feel very glamorous to me in a way that's from-the-past chic, but not show-offy. Searching around eBay just today, I found these fantastic-weird sunglasses, a pretty and feminine makeup bag, this ultra-fashiony heavy-hardware necklace, a sleek black purse, and one fold-over clutch, which I'd pair with a silky, bright-red sundress and feel like the most sophisticated lady in all the land.

P.S. Serious question: If I bought and wore one of those J'Adore Dior t-shirts would it be cool and retro and like an early '90s supermodel or would I look like a jerk? I can't always tell if something is too soon...

The shoes that all the cool girls are wearing

278821634_tp.jpg
OK. I have no idea if that's really true, but, recently, I'vewc41_1.jpg seen three stylish, hipsterish women wearing low-heeled, vintage-looking peep-toes and I have thought, "Now, those are the summer shoes for me." Think about it: They're dressy enough for pencil skirts, casual enough for shorts, feminine, classic and they're absolutely comfortable Thumbnail image for !BU4gCp!CGk~$(KGrHgoH-DYEjlLl5L7,BKPuyGBhG!~~_2.JPG.jpegtoo. Plus, you can get them now on eBay for super, super cheap. I found them in bright red, navy, maroon, and this earthy, extra-versatile light brown, which, if I found in my size, I would snap up quick.

How often do you fail with online vintage?

Thumbnail image for 633772890298313750-44-G.jpgI do approximately 85 percent of my shopping online, mostly with vintage stuff. This is not only because I'm amazingly lazy (editor-in-chief Kim France once referred to me as a slug and she was not wrong), but because there's a vast and interesting fashion inventory available on the Web that I can't always find on land. However, we all know this kind of shopping has its risks--items are one of a kind and usually not returnable, and if something doesn't work, you're basically stuck. For example, I would very very much like to own this awesome-looking jumpsuit (from my favorite online vintage shop, The Urban Collection), but it has the potential to be a colossal fail. Though knowing my measurements helps, there's a very real chance that it could make me look like a Goth, sausaged Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie. How often do you take these gambles? And how often do you fail? (I'm about 5:1, successes vs. epic disasters, btw.)

Help! I've fallen into a rut and I can't get out!

P1010613.jpgReaders, I think I'm in a fashion rut. I have yet to solve summer!BTgKNOg!2k~$(KGrHgoH-EIEjlLl09!jBKIzE3u7lQ~~_2.JPG 2009's great riddles (jumpsuits, fedoras, denim vests), nor can I fully get behind (heh) some its scarier offerings (short shorts, boyfriend jeans). And so I'm escaping to all vintage, all of the time, which is not necessarily good. My closet is filled with polka dot scarves, bold floral prints, starry blouses from a past season Kate Moss/Top Shop DSC_955.JPGline that do not fit (you were right, Deelee!), old-timey bags and wacky Mrs. Roper jewelry. Can a wardrobe be too fun? Too filled with unique pieces from eBay? Right now I want more than anything to be sitting in this vintage Chloe outfit wearing vintageferrb.jpg '70s sunglasses and carrying this vintage Ferragamo bag (by the way, I'd be sitting in my just-bought vintage bar stools which look exactly like these). Yes, current fashion will always be derivative, but I wonder if I'm living too much in the past? Is there a "vintage overkill" line no chic woman should ever cross? 'Cause, man, if there is one, I fear I passed it miles ago.

Cheating on eBay: My khaki dress dreams

ep32_carrie_sunglasses.jpg
Years ago, while watching a rather lewd episode of Sex and the City involving a politician and a shower , I spotted a khaki dress worn by Carrie Bradshaw that I knew in my heart I had to have (full disclosure: admitting that I glean style inspiration from SATC always makes me feel somehow embarrassed and clich??, but, you know, it happens). It was a late '60s or perhaps early '70s shirtdress, in a warm, almost golden khaki color and it made Sarah Jessica Parker look
Thumbnail image for 1239393390273.jpgamazingly chic and a bit like Jackie O. I have been searching for a dress like this on eBay for--wait for it--nine years. No dice (I even won a dress that looked like this, but it was all sorts of wrong.) Then, on Friday, I wandered into my local Brooklyn Industries and found this on the sales rack. It's not the same thing, but it achieves the same sexy-sophisticated urban-safari effect. I loovve this dress. There are loads of other desirable items on sale on the BI site right now, including this, this, and this. Check it out.

Friday roundup: Susan Boyle's makeover, Barneys teams up with eBay, and awesome Peter Max prints

20090422_boyle_250x3751

The entire world cannot stop talking about Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle's potential makeover...I, for one, was kind of feeling her vintage-esque Wednesday outfit, a combo of a floral print dress, heels and leather jacket.

This is cool news: In an effort to be more earth-friendly, Barneys New York collected unused jeans and had them re-purposed by top designers like Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, and Rodarte. The new, one-of-kind pieces will be auctioned off on eBay beginning April 30th, bidding starts at 99 cents. (eBay fashion addict)

Picture_1 A post on Refinery 29 has sparked a full-blown obsession with finding pieces with vintage Peter Max prints, including this groovy scarf.

And, last, let's end the week on a light, happy note: Have you met Fifi Lapin? The bunny who likes designer clothes? Oh, you must, you must. This week she's wearing Top Shop and I am beyond enchanted.
