Etsy: I want these shoes

il_430xN.85058785.jpgI've been on the fence about the oxford shoe trend (main worry: that they'd make me resemble a dumpy, pear-shaped Alice in Wonderland character), but then, on Friday, I saw the cutest girl wearing a black t-shirt, black skinny jeans and a pair of pale oxfords that looked exactly like these. She had her hair pinned in a pretty bun, wore rosy-deep pink lipstick, small dangling earrings and fun, vintage-looking sunglasses. The effect was sleek, and a little punk, and I wanted it immediately, except...it was so hot! And she was wearing black jeans! Then, weirdly, later that day, I spotted the same girl, and she'd changed the outfit just slightly, switching out the pants for a bubbly miniskirt and it all still looked perfect. The shoes really work. I'm also into this vintage Ferragamo pair, which would be excellent with tights long into fall.

Etsy: Our first live shopping event! (You know you want to watch.)

il_430xN.66190133.jpgil_430xN.81955692.jpgHow fun is it to watch other people shop? Answer: FUN. Like whenever there's a makeover montage in a movie and you see this high-energy spree and then suddenly the character is totally beautiful and carrying 14 bags and life is perfection. Or how about shopping game shows like Supermarket Sweep? Every time I watch that program I always wind up yelling at the TV screen "Grab the HAM! Grab the HAM! Could you just GRAB THE HAM?"
Anyway. Tonight, at precisely 5pm, Lucky's lovely online fashion editor Jackie Nasser will be shopping in public, specifically on Etsy. She'll be hunting for the following awesome fall trends: Jeweled bib necklaces, cocktail rings, ‘80s-revival pieces, men’s-inspired clothes, plaid, bold florals, and, last but not least, long-sleeved minidresses. If you're interested in finding any of this stuff at super-affordable prices, you should really check it out. Also because cute clothes you can actually buy are a heckuva lot better than expensive canned meat. Here's the link. It's live at five.

Which John Hughes heroine do you relate to the most?

MollyRingwaldActressMenuPic.jpg Probably like half the people of my generation, I spent a large part of this past weekend watching old John Hughes movies and feeling nostalgic. Have you seen any of these lately? They're still so awesome, fun, and completely smart. I still have crushes on the boys. I still want to be the girls. And, maybe more than anything, I still love looking at all of the outfits. Though most of my friends were far more influenced by the female characters in Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (in VERY serious ways), and as much as I've rhapsodized about Molly Ringwald's look in The Breakfast Club, I realized it was really Samantha Baker in Sixteen Candles who made me love fashion. She was just so adorably casual and well-accessorized and natural and pretty. It's in some ways, to this day, everything I want to be.
Today on Etsy, I found a slick, off-the-shoulder cotton tee that's very Samantha-esque, a more grown up version of her plaid skirt, and a great pair of '80s ankle boots to finish the look. Now all I need is just one date with Jake Ryan.

A new thing to love (insanely)...Versace shoes on eBay

vers shoe.jpgThumbnail image for 1988_versace_ad_wpp-1.jpgThere's something about the late '80s/early '90s Versace image that makes me absolutely INSANE and flooded with love. It's decadent, but not in a way that seems gaudy; wild and sexy, but not sleazy or cheap. Versace clothes and accessories from this period seem like the stuff the coolest girl at the party would 100_6090.jpgbe wearing while she drank champagne, flirted, told good jokes and stories, but never got too drunk. It is, in essence, my adolescent ideal of what a grownup woman should be. I'm even crazy about the bizarro vintage ads, which feature supermodels in perhaps too-bright attire jumping, standing on boulders, hanging upside down--all just really glamour-jubilant, triumphant in their own fabulousness.

These things are good: Throw pillows on Etsy

51W6PDR6ZAL._SL500.jpgI caught the 1985 movie Mask on cable the other day and I realized that I've gleaned more inspiration from this film than I probably should admit to anyone, much less a whole blog readership, but whatevs, here goes: I love Mask. For starters, it represents my favorite Cher era (her post-disco, pre-techno, "serious actress" mode, see Moonstruck). As a tough, Harley-riding mom struggling to raise a disabled son, Cher is beyond-expectations great and she rocks every jean skirt, lace top, black tank, men's button down, and piece of leather she puts on. (I've tried to replicate the biker-druggie-with-heart-of-gold look, more than once, without much success, but I vow to keep trying!)
Anyway...

Hmmmmm. Leather in the summer?

Thumbnail image for 36332232a685d487_a_magazine_party_002_wenn5323195-1.preview.jpgred3.JPG.jpegYou all know how I feel about the hot-sticky-grody-ness that can be leather against your skin in the warm weather, but obviously lady Chloe Sevigny does not feel the same. She strutted about a party this week wearing neck-to-ankle animal skin, and well, she looked weirdly great. It made me remember there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to good style, and then I saw this slick little red number on eBay and I felt like someone, not me, needed to wear it with cute heels immediately and be admired by everyone they meet. As for me, I'll stick with this "leather-like" version, because if there is a rule in style it's knowing one's limits, and mine are that I pass out when I get too warm (not sexy!).

The search starts now: Boots

283760880_o.jpgIt's perhaps a sad statement about the not-living-in-the-momentness of our culture that as soon as summer really hits (and, even worse, after we complained about its late arrival. Um, a zillion times), we immediately start thinking about fall clothes and accessories. But, whatever man. Fall fashion is super fun and cozy and sexy and July is the time when I start hunting for my favorite cool-weather item: Boots. Currently I'm on a mission to find the near exact look that Molly Ringwald rocked in the Breakfast Club. I know, I know, so cliche--many of us have had the Claire Standish vision before--but this time, it's SERIOUS. These boots have been eluding me for years (decades?) and, this year, I must find and wear them with slim skirts and silky pale tops and a leather jacket or I may die. So far, no dice. However, if this near perfect pair is your size, please, please, for the love of all things '80s, Brat Pack and holy, purchase them now.

On the hunt for...Ella Moss

!BTgdv!gBGk~$(KGrHgoH-C8EjlLly(kEBKI0ZrHj,g~~_2.JPG !BTwj86gB2k~$(KGrHgoOKkYEjlLmY4pPBKKFoQ,1Cg~~_2.JPG
Jen Ford's adorably chic outfit last Friday made me remember Ella Moss, a designer whose clothes are feminine, often classic, and usually, actually pretty affordable. They're even more budget-friendly when you find them on eBay, of course. Today I spotted this delicate, billowy tank that I feel would be perfect with flat sandals and skinny jeans; this fun, checked dress (wear with bright, colored flats and your hair in a French braid!), an ideal, ultra-soft pima cotton tee; and this, which, OK, sure, has a little old-timey prison vibe, but with slicked-back hair and red lipstick could be '80s in the best possible way.

Plus!
Enter here to win an Ella Moss shopping spree worth $500!

Style monogamy: Do you have it?

happygolucky_450x3001.jpg
I'm one of those annoyingly monogamous people: I vine-swing from one relationship into the next, watch movies over and again until I can mouth all of the dialogue, and I'll listen to a favorite record up to the moment where it makes me or someone else certifiably crazy (true story: In 1987, my dad grew so ill from hearing me play the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, he literally threw the cassette out of my bedroom window).

I'm like this with my style inspirations, too. For years, most of my favorite clothes had a certain late-'70s New York career girl
!BSB,(Hw!2k~$(KGrHgoH-DQEjlLl),B+BKBDMd1bZ!~~_2.JPG
aesthetic best represented by films like Kramer vs. Kramer. But
a36d_1.JPG
lately, all I want to achieve in life is the joyful, slightly insane, retro-'80s fashion chaos that is Poppy from Happy-Go-Lucky. This is almost all I think about.
One of her less wacky looks includes a red-and-white striped top with big red hoop earrings, an outfit I've been rocking with skinny gray jeans, white Chucks, and Ray-Bans while walking around Brooklyn on the weekends and feeling very "Happy" indeed.

Used bathing suit anyone?

ebay02.jpgNow, I know that what I’m about to propose might sound as grody to some of you as the idea of eating toenails, but listen: Vintage bathing suits are cute! And germs can be washed away! I'll admit, there is a weird ick factor surrounding not-new swimwear that makes some folks feel mighty hesitant, and on top of that there's the fit issue, which is always challenging/nightmarish—even more so when an item can't be returned. However, I'm still going to argue that the merits of a glam retro one-piece, an ‘80s-fabulous version like this, or a flirty shorts-kini that covers up a lumpy belly far outweigh the minor hygienic risks. Plus, they're cheap! Okay. Let the debate begin. PS. You can also check out great online sources for new suits by clicking here. Read More
