Etsy: Perhaps the prettiest underwear ever, at prices you can afford

il_430xN.83101458.jpgI've decided there are two things no one thinks about buying in the depths of summer: 1. Coats (I literally tried to give away half of mine this weekend with no takers), and, 2. Underwear. The height of lingerie season always seems to fall squarely in romance-forced February; a month when I don't even love seeing my pasty, scaly bod in clothes, much less a pair of skimpy knickers. So, I'm stocking up now, when I feel tan, fit and sexy enough to actually enjoy my purchases. To that end, I found the most outstanding, handmade underwear on Etsy today. It's from a London-based store called Love Baby Grand which turns out truly unique, feminine, playful designs. (Are you kidding me with these heart panties? So cute! So vampy-but-not-forced!) Best of all, none of the meticulously-crafted pieces costs more than 40 bones.*

*OK, ok. There's one camisole that's $55.

Etsy: Don't miss Jackie Nasser's beach guide!

il_200x200.77076352.jpgOnline fashion editor Jackie Nasser has a "beach essentials" guide on Etsy this month that I can't stop clicking back to, staring at, and maybe mouth breathing a little. Her picks--ranging from chic scarves to summery earrings and the perfect striped espadrilles--are truly inspiring, unique, and comprehensive. I want all of it, and, though some of the items are already selling out (Go Jackie's good taste!), surfing through is a great excuse to find great and little known Etsy stores I may have otherwise missed.

The shoes that all the cool girls are wearing

278821634_tp.jpg
OK. I have no idea if that's really true, but, recently, I'vewc41_1.jpg seen three stylish, hipsterish women wearing low-heeled, vintage-looking peep-toes and I have thought, "Now, those are the summer shoes for me." Think about it: They're dressy enough for pencil skirts, casual enough for shorts, feminine, classic and they're absolutely comfortable Thumbnail image for !BU4gCp!CGk~$(KGrHgoH-DYEjlLl5L7,BKPuyGBhG!~~_2.JPG.jpegtoo. Plus, you can get them now on eBay for super, super cheap. I found them in bright red, navy, maroon, and this earthy, extra-versatile light brown, which, if I found in my size, I would snap up quick.

The perfect wedding present

Thumbnail image for il_430xN.75811236.jpg
il_430xN.76087082.jpgA few Christmases ago, I was totally stumped over what to give my husband. I think I'd bought him some lame utility item like socks and I wanted to supplement with something else "special." This is when I came across artist Ashley Goldberg. I bought one of her prints on Etsy, You Make Me Happy, which features two monsters touching hands and smiling at each other nervously. It was a huge hit, is now hanging in our bathroom, and it makes me think about how much I love my husband every time I brush my teeth.

il_430xN.75811169.jpgI tell you this dorky/sappy story because it's wedding season and the Ashley G Etsy store has tons of graphic, interesting, beautiful prints on sale now and they're all super affordable and great for gifts. Specifically, she's started creating custom portraits of couples, from photos, which (with a cool frame) could be the perfect wedding present*, something unique and thoughtful, that will maybe make your friends remember why they love each other for years.

*I kind of lied there. The perfect wedding present is the red Le Creuset pot Emily gave me, but this could come pretty close.

On the hunt for...Ella Moss

!BTgdv!gBGk~$(KGrHgoH-C8EjlLly(kEBKI0ZrHj,g~~_2.JPG !BTwj86gB2k~$(KGrHgoOKkYEjlLmY4pPBKKFoQ,1Cg~~_2.JPG
Jen Ford's adorably chic outfit last Friday made me remember Ella Moss, a designer whose clothes are feminine, often classic, and usually, actually pretty affordable. They're even more budget-friendly when you find them on eBay, of course. Today I spotted this delicate, billowy tank that I feel would be perfect with flat sandals and skinny jeans; this fun, checked dress (wear with bright, colored flats and your hair in a French braid!), an ideal, ultra-soft pima cotton tee; and this, which, OK, sure, has a little old-timey prison vibe, but with slicked-back hair and red lipstick could be '80s in the best possible way.

Plus!

A.P.C. madras on eBay?! Already?

!BTkU8Zw!2k~$(KGrHgoOKisEjlLmIUKBBKJIBYb-vw~~_2.JPG
Sometimes I see an item on eBay that is so cute and amazing that I think the person selling it must be at least a little insane. Such is the case with this unreal-adorable, perfect-for-right-now A.P.C. plaid top. I know, we Lucky women have waxed poetic about the French line's summer collection already, but it bears repeating that the stuff is awesome, and if you can find a piece at more than half the price...buy I say! Buy! Also, on eBay today: This classic A.P.C. tunic, sweet red dress, and the ideal pair of cork wedges.

Cute, affordable dresses save me from the monster

Jeepers-Creepers-2-on-VHS-Reviewed-Two-II-Second-Sequel-Horror-Movie-Film-Scary-Psycho-Maniac.jpgSometimes, for no real reason I can discern, I wake up in the morning and feel as though I am too fat to live. It's as if my body dysmorphic, bad-permed, 15-year-old self has come back from the dead, armed with a vendetta to eat my brain. The whole enterprise is terrifying and lasts sometimes an entire morning, basically until I find something cute to wear (like one of these amazing dresses from Voodoo Couture Vintage--check them out here, here, and here), recognize that I am not living in an opposite-land Shallow Hal-ian nightmare, and appreciate what I have. Are you ever briefly visited by embarrassing, regressive, "I feel fat" monsters? If so, how do you fight back?

Barbara Bui on eBay! (and a remembrance of things past)

!BTburyw!mk~$(KGrHgoOKjEEjlLm(s8hBKIdPeV4Zw~~_2.JPGBarbara Bui is one of those cool, offbeat designers I might've never known about if not for Emily Hsieh. Years ago, when I first started at Lucky, Emily and I f7e1_2.JPGsat next to each other in what was essentially one giant, cluttered cubicle. We spent our work days talking about, looking at, and figuring out how to write about clothes and accessories (oh, and gossiping, eating things that were bad for us and playing music low on the iTunes—it was a sweet time). Because our personal and  sartorial styles are different, but complementary—she!BS6CRFg!Wk~$(KGrHgoOKkIEjlLmVgL3BKFl3olZQg~~_2.JPG sleek and modern, me messy and vintage—I learned a great deal from Emily. I specifically remember watching her unfold the edgy-elegant Barbara Bui pieces she'd called in and staring for a long time, struck by their awesome weirdness. I tell you all of this because it's fun to remember the moments one actually fell in love with fashion, but also because there are some amazing, affordable BB finds on eBay today (slick shoes, an incredible bag, this unusual metal-adorned t-shirt) that some fashion lover should own right away.

My perfect bag odyssey, continued: TOO MANY CHOICES

264630525_tp.jpgHas anyone ever read the book The Paradox of Choice? In it, writer Barry Schwartz theorizes that modern consumers have too many options and these options are turning us into fearful, confused, crazy stress freaks. To be honest,A my current hunt for a new bag is making me agree with Mr. Schwartz very much indeed. I just can't decide: Now I kind of want something woven, retro and summery like this, this, thisA or this. But among this kind of style, I can't decide on a color, and among the colors, I can't decide on a size. I feel like a whiny eight-year-old who seriously just needs someone to pick a bag for me--like my mom used to do with back-to-school clothes. Sigh.

Show and tell: My favorite recent eBay things

Thumbnail image for cccccccccc8.jpg
After a few months where I feared our relationship was cooling off (I started flirting with regular stores, eBay all stoically pretended not to care) somethingA
Thumbnail image for 21166_in_l.jpg
wonderful and downright cosmic is happening between eBay and me lately: I can't stop buying things, which is OK, because thus far these things have been really cheap. My exhaustive Diane Fres hunt led me to this outstanding dress for just...wait for it...$12.99! I was looking for something a little fancy to throw over jeans and a tank (with chains and heeled sandals)A
eb1-1.jpg
and I found precisely that in this Hanii Y sequined shrug ($47). I also purchased a punkish Yoko Devereaux tee to wear with shorts and Chucks ($16), a grunge-esque baby-doll dressA ($11.99), and a pretty floral tote ($20). The rekindling hasn't been entirely positive, however: I don't think I'll ever forgive eBay for the loss of these awesome/weird red shoes.A
