Etsy: I want these shoes

il_430xN.85058785.jpgI've been on the fence about the oxford shoe trend (main worry: that they'd make me resemble a dumpy, pear-shaped Alice in Wonderland character), but then, on Friday, I saw the cutest girl wearing a black t-shirt, black skinny jeans and a pair of pale oxfords that looked exactly like these. She had her hair pinned in a pretty bun, wore rosy-deep pink lipstick, small dangling earrings and fun, vintage-looking sunglasses. The effect was sleek, and a little punk, and I wanted it immediately, except...it was so hot! And she was wearing black jeans! Then, weirdly, later that day, I spotted the same girl, and she'd changed the outfit just slightly, switching out the pants for a bubbly miniskirt and it all still looked perfect. The shoes really work. I'm also into this vintage Ferragamo pair, which would be excellent with tights long into fall.

Etsy: Throwing a Themed Lady Party

bachelor_partyposter.jpgWhen I think of a bachelorette night, I think of naughty baked goods, girly shots, shenanigans and dangerous teetering on high heels. However, my friend Melissa— perhaps wisely recognizing that these fetes can skew Coyote Ugly, with a large serving of ugly—has requested I throw her a more civilized affair. She wants a sit-down dinner where we dress fancy, drink old-fashioned cocktails and socialize in a classy way (if things devolve into a late-night dance party, she's open to that, too). Since it's at my house, I'm considering going all Mad Men-ish glamorous with retro food, linens and glassware, maybe even some old, early-'60s Life magazines floating around.  I've already found an array of party dresses from Etsy store Red House Vintage that seem perfect for the occasion, but I'm leaning toward this one's glittery, metallic, Betty Draper-esque sophistication—it looks comfortable enough for hosting, sitting around and, eventually, Single Ladies-ing it up when the (cheesy, dorky, awesome, dance-y) time comes.

Which John Hughes heroine do you relate to the most?

MollyRingwaldActressMenuPic.jpg Probably like half the people of my generation, I spent a large part of this past weekend watching old John Hughes movies and feeling nostalgic. Have you seen any of these lately? They're still so awesome, fun, and completely smart. I still have crushes on the boys. I still want to be the girls. And, maybe more than anything, I still love looking at all of the outfits. Though most of my friends were far more influenced by the female characters in Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (in VERY serious ways), and as much as I've rhapsodized about Molly Ringwald's look in The Breakfast Club, I realized it was really Samantha Baker in Sixteen Candles who made me love fashion. She was just so adorably casual and well-accessorized and natural and pretty. It's in some ways, to this day, everything I want to be.
Today on Etsy, I found a slick, off-the-shoulder cotton tee that's very Samantha-esque, a more grown up version of her plaid skirt, and a great pair of '80s ankle boots to finish the look. Now all I need is just one date with Jake Ryan.

Gorgeous bridal headgear on Etsy (and the best wedding video ever!)

il_430xN.82131966.jpgThere are very few things I'd change about my wedding, because it was pretty much perfectly low-key and rad and exactly what I wanted, but if I had to pick something, I'd probably say that I wish I'd worn some kind of glamorous, meshy, retro-style headpiece like the ones sold by Bat Cakes Couture. They just seem so old-timey feminine, playful, and even a little formal, without all the fuss of a veil. If you're getting married--or even if you're attending a fancy event, they're that cool--you might want to consider one of dozens of options here. I particularly love this feather birdcage look and this slightly-crazy ostrich style, both of which are elegant and so, so, fun.

While we're on the topic of marriage, have you seen the BEST WEDDING ENTRANCE VIDEO EVER? Wait it out for the groom and bride. It's worth it.

New style icon: Georgia Jagger

Picture 11.jpgPicture 14.jpg I've been staring at pictures of Georgia Jagger (daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, and focus of Lucky's April Inspiration Board) a little obsessively all day. She's the new face of Hudson Jeans, and though, since she's just 17 years old, some are complaining that her poses are too provocative, I'm into the campaign. More than that, I just LOVE young Georgia's entire look--from the messy hair, to the bright red lipstick, to the sophisticated take on punk, it's all right up my alley and super inspiring. Take this leather jacket/red dress/tie-up booties ensemble (find similar pieces here, here, and here). It's urban, feminine, and chic, but not too put together, which honestly describes every outfit I'd ever want to wear.

Etsy: Don't miss Jackie Nasser's beach guide!

il_200x200.77076352.jpgOnline fashion editor Jackie Nasser has a "beach essentials" guide on Etsy this month that I can't stop clicking back to, staring at, and maybe mouth breathing a little. Her picks--ranging from chic scarves to summery earrings and the perfect striped espadrilles--are truly inspiring, unique, and comprehensive. I want all of it, and, though some of the items are already selling out (Go Jackie's good taste!), surfing through is a great excuse to find great and little known Etsy stores I may have otherwise missed.

The search starts now: Boots

283760880_o.jpgIt's perhaps a sad statement about the not-living-in-the-momentness of our culture that as soon as summer really hits (and, even worse, after we complained about its late arrival. Um, a zillion times), we immediately start thinking about fall clothes and accessories. But, whatever man. Fall fashion is super fun and cozy and sexy and July is the time when I start hunting for my favorite cool-weather item: Boots. Currently I'm on a mission to find the near exact look that Molly Ringwald rocked in the Breakfast Club. I know, I know, so cliche--many of us have had the Claire Standish vision before--but this time, it's SERIOUS. These boots have been eluding me for years (decades?) and, this year, I must find and wear them with slim skirts and silky pale tops and a leather jacket or I may die. So far, no dice. However, if this near perfect pair is your size, please, please, for the love of all things '80s, Brat Pack and holy, purchase them now.

A reliably great vintage store on eBay and Etsy (my mind=blown)

il_430xN.75897904.jpgI've been crushing on the truly excellent eBay shop Persephone Vintage for about a year now and it's gotten to a point where I check its inventory almost every day. The selection is just spot on--current and perfectly original all at once, the kinds of clothes worn by artsy-cool ladies I always want to be. Anyway. Imagine how truly psyched I was to see Persephone on Etsy, with a larger selection that includes killer shoes, bags, dresses and--totally new to me--a handful of interesting handmade items too. If you love vintage (and I know you do) you need to check it out.

Etsy: The stars and stripes are big and bright...well, maybe just the stars.

il_430xN.76810576.jpg
il_430xN.76634737.jpgI'm feeling all patriotic today and excited about the three-day weekend and it's making me want to buy things that look American, in a very literal, flag-type way. Even though this might be dorky, I've always secretly loved stars as a design element (perhaps not as much as the girl who had 56 of them tattooed on her face, but a lot). So naturally I'm drawn to this awesome recycled-sail pillow, which would be perfect in a punk-rockish loft or at my future dream beach house. I'm also into this delicate star necklace, a peachy-pink pair of star heels, and this nautical-looking dress, which fits the bill because it's made by someone named Jenn3star, but also because I believe it would be an adorable outfit for Fourth of July. What are you doing/wearing over the holiday?

Yellow sundresses seen in a new light

279866842_tp.jpg
Thumbnail image for A-12-10-112.jpgI'm weirdly reading an advanced copy of American On Purpose, an autobiography by Craig Ferguson (you know him, he's the Scottish, hot-for-an-older-dude, late night host who's on after Letterman). In it, he tells all sorts of stories about life in '70s Scotland, and what it was like to live (and drink a lot) in the East Village of New York City in the '80s. So far, however, the detail that has struck me the most is when Ferguson describes meeting his future wife for the first time and how she was wearing a yellow, '50s-style dress that made her look ultra-sexy and "terminally hip." I'd never thought about yellow nor '50s-style dresses in quite that way, but today when I searched  on eBay, I could see what he meant. Paired with red lipstick and neat, pretty hair; these could make one appear flirty and kittenish in a very Heather-Graham-at-the-end-of-Swingers way (a movie which, outdated lines or no, I still consider a masterpiece).
