The Girls of ebay blog: It was bound to happen someday...

tumblr_koupoacqNj1qzm2tio1_400.jpgIf you spend any time on eBay (and certainly if you spend the amount of obsessive-to-the-point-of-scary time I do), you get to know a special little world of women. The pose-y, often flirty, sometimes verrrrry serious, extra-styled, amateur models of the auction site are a fascinating lot. Their winking, coquettish faces have encouraged me to bid on vintage items I would've never thunk to own; while some of their more vampy postures have kept me away from pieces I otherwise may have coveted. So I was kind of thrilled to see the genius new blog "Girls of Ebay" which celebrates these ladies in a spare, sexy, retro way. They're displayed like hipster pinups--maybe the Farrahs of their day?--and they're awfully fun to gaze upon.

Etsy: Cool necklaces for when your wardrobe feels less than inspiring

il_430xN.52030686.jpgil_430xN.57797822.jpgWell, this is it ladies. We've hit the true muckety muck of summer. I am essentially walking around the city feeling like Swamp Thing, a creature far too gross and (I'm guessing) sweaty to put on cute clothes. Instead, I've got a sad little uniform going: jersey dress or jersey tank and cotton skirt, plus sandals. It is not what one would call thrilling. In fact, yesterday, an old man at the train station yelled in my direction, "That girl knows how to dress for the beach!" I was going to dinner. Anyway. From here out, I've decided to anoint August "accessories month" and try my darnedest to step things up, styling-wise. How about we start with big, cool necklaces? I found some good ones today on Etsy (check out this and this and this), they're the kind of pieces that make everything just a little more dressy, more pulled together, and less slimy creature of the night.

Are denim dresses ever OK?

Thumbnail image for LotImg224.jpg281659376_tp.jpgI keep hearing all of these positive stories (by fashion people I respect) about the coolness of denim dresses and I keep thinking, "No way, really?" I don't know why, but a one-piece jeans outfit fills me with a particular type of terror. It's as if I'd put one on and suddenly become back-in-the-day Britney and I'd look over at my husband and he'd be wearing head-to-toe stone wash, and it would all be scary, in a "Naughty Girls Need Love Too" 3405_1.jpgway. However, when I poke around a bit, 37479275.jpgand open my frightened little mind, I notice there are some very good-looking DDs to be had. Like this button-up style, which would be great with flat sandals, or this dark-wash jumper-ish look, which is '70s-Three's Company cute, or how about a corset version? Is that too 2001 Brit-Brit? I just don't know.

Hot trend I love: Vintage Hawaiian prints

238506820_tp.jpg257460602_tp.jpgThough I'm usually the laziest person in the world, I've developed a new fixation with the iced lattes from Gorilla Coffee, which is about 20 blocks from my apartment. Last Sunday at 8AM, I begged my husband to walk to G.C. with me, but once we were there waiting in the enormous line, I totally ignored him. Finally he said, "If you don't stop staring at that woman's outfit, I'm going over there and tell her that you love her dress and you're going to write about her on your blog." "Nooo!" ANYWAY, the dress was amazing, with a fun, not-too-busy retro-Hawaiian print (similar to styles like this, this, or this). She'd paired it with medium-thin red belt, soft-looking flat black leather sandals, messy-pretty hair parted in the middle, gold hoop earrings, and a happy little shade of red lipstick. OK, sure, I checked her out for a really long time.
