Though high-waisted pants can be tricky to wear, I noticed two of my co-workers successfully pull off the look at the office last week. For editorial assistant Alexandra Willinger, the key to getting her new 18th Amendment flares right is pairing them with something simple, like a solid cap-sleeve tee and patent leather skimmers. "This style works for me because they are high, but not too high," she says. "And they're incredibly comfortable." Fashion news editor Jen Ford has
been wearing her new Malik jeans by J Brand with a sheer men's button-down and strappy brown sandals, and loves them for similar reasons: "They hit right at the top of the hip, so they can flatter lots of body types," Jen says. "And they're also made of the lightest-weight denim I've ever seen, which looks better on most people than ones made of rigid fabrics."
Erie Basin in Red Hook, Brooklyn, might be my favorite store to have opened within the last year, and these Lee Hale candlesticks are a great example of why. I've never seen anything like them—the bird feet are delicately rendered in oxidized bronze and exquisitely detailed in a Ted Muehling-ish kind of way. They're both totally weird and utterly beautiful at the same time, and if I had the means, I'd buy them by the dozen to scatter across the table at my next dinner party. Erie Basin is packed full of other stunning but offbeat objects, both new and vintage; and if you can't make it out to Red Hook, the e-commerce site will give you a satisfying taste of what they've got in stock.
"Most body creams are either overscented and cloyingly sweet, or their consistency is almost too intensely buttery," notes senior beauty editor Cristina Mueller. Which is why she's totally devoted to this olive-oil-based lotion by N.V. Perricone: "It's fragrance-free, long-lasting, and rich but not over the top," she says. "And the fancy ingredients are of the quality you'd normally only find in skincare for your face."
Associate fashion editor Ann Brady has been wearing the same cardigan wrap pretty much nonstop ever since creative director Andrea Linett (who also has one) gave it to her. It's hooded; surprisingly warm, given that it's made of tissue-thin woven silk; and loose-fitting in a really flattering, body-skimming way. Great for planes—where Ann can frequently be found, traveling to and from shoots with her boss—and just about everywhere else as well.
Until I met Sania (in my opinion the absolute top brow expert in New York City), filling in my brows with any sort of powder or pencil was a dubious proposition. Any attempt to darken them resulted in a creepy, painted-on look that made me want to wash my face as fast as possible. But then Sania turned me on to this Paul & Joe pencil which has completely changed my routine. Apply it with a light hand in short, feathery strokes and trace the perimeter of your brows. Each pencil comes with two different colors so it's very easy to get a great match, and the pigments are really subtle and blend easily, which makes it nearly impossible to mess up.
Our managing editor Regan Solmo's summer fixation is these beaded silk bracelets. There's something very simple and—in pale colors—pretty in a ballet-ish kind of way about the coiled ribbon and gold beads. But they come in tons of colors too, and if, like Regan, you decide that one's just not enough, they're very cute when stacked up on your wrist.
I just came across a brand-new site called BluLuxe Home that's a great source for chic, one-of-a-kind housewares. They've got a compelling mix of new and vintage pieces that cover pretty much any aesthetic—from a groovy paisley needlepoint pillow to
a mahogany Chippendale chair reinvented with a coat of high-gloss red paint. Everything, new stuff included, is stocked in limited quantities, so if you like what you see, order it post-haste.
Associate fashion editor Ann Brady has been in the market for what she anticipates will be her new summer staple: light-wash denim shorts. She finally found a pair by Citizens of Humanity that fits all of her criteria: It's non-whiskered, and is neither too short nor too tight. "The Bermuda style feels just a touch masculine, which is good to counter all the feminine blouses I've been buying lately," Ann says. "And they'll look great with bolds or pastels—and of course a little bit of a tan too."
When it comes to scouting out great stuff, our senior fashion editor, Laurie Trott, is obsessive enough to leave no source untapped. She recently found a cool summer basic in the men's section of The Vermont Country Store's website. Technically, it's a "gentlemen's lightweight patchwork nightshirt," but Laurie co-opted it as both a beach cover-up and dress. "So cute over a bikini," she says, "or to fancy it up a bit at night, add heels and a skinny buffed-leather belt."
