I want: patent red sandals

So I am desperately in love with these red patent See by Chloé sandals, but I just don't want to spend $265 dollars on them (I dunno, maybe they're worth it?). I haven't been able to find anything that's a perfect alternative, but while searching, I did stumble across these red patent Birkenstocks. I kind of love the unexpected marriage of a '60s Mod sensibility with the inherent earthiness of a Birkenstock. And they can't really be beat for comfort. Plus, our extremely chic accessories director, Julia Topolski, rocks them all summer long (though in brown, not in red). What say you?

Chemistry Lessons

Cat says fashion girls never wear makeup, and perhaps it's true: I'm perpetually on a hunt for natural (as in, no-makeup) looking beauty products.

I do kind of love the way my face blushes after a couple of glasses of wine or after a good workout. It's that unattainable pinkish hue that can never seem to be captured by a blush of any kind. Powders, creams, the powder cream combo—not for me. I recently tried one from Smashbox called O-Glow. It's pretty much the coolest technology I've come across in a beauty product since the Lancôme eye makeup remover. It's a clear gel that intuitively reacts with your skin's personal chemistry. A goji-berry complex sets off some kind of microcirculatory effect. The result is a shade that your skin naturally blushes! How cool is that? Even cooler: It actually lasts. If only I had thought of this idea for a high school chemistry project!

The Little House on the Prairie Look: Chic or No?

For some reason, I keep thinking about Laura Ashley—I don't know why, because I've never had that particular fetish before (in fact, I don't think I've ever even owned a Laura Ashley dress). By which I mean that I want floral prints. And more floral prints. I love this top—which seems like a surprising departure for the usually-sleek French Connection—because it mixes two equally girly patterns. The description claims that it's loose-fitting, but I think I might order it a size or two too big since I want it to be extra-flowy. Maybe I'll pair it with white pants and sandals—like this pair from Seychelles in our Accessories Under $100 guide—for spring? I can also imagine it tucked into a pencil skirt with proper heels. What do you guys think? Is it a buy?

How tuxedo jackets hide my monstrous shoulders (and can do the same for you!)

Here's something: I have the shoulders of a linebacker. This is one of those issues (along with my rather large ribcage) that fashion writers rarely address when they talk about "dressing for your shape," but both exist for me, and they're definitely something I have to dress around. My personal solution has been to avoid button-downs at all costs, wear vests with pride, go for scoopneck shirts, and choose blazers that you don't have to close. Here is where tuxedo jackets come in—the women's styles are usually narrow and fitted, and they look great worn open. So, when paired with wide leg jeans or A-line minidresses, everything appears sleek and balanced, like a well-proportioned female, not a collegiate rower. Here are some styles I'm eyeing today: A great deal from Theory, Vivienne Westwood's offbeat take, and a truly perfect vintage find. So tell me: What are you dressing around?

New eco resource!

Our crazily stylish West Coast Bureau Chief, Marlien Rentmeester, just dropped me a note about a new eco home site pioneered by Priscilla Woolworth (of the Woolworth department store family). It has everything from cleaning products and light bulbs to baby gear, but I'm particularly obsessed with the gift section. I love these striped beach bags and this horse pen is both weird and cool (and only $5). For more eco ideas, click over here to our super-useful green guide.
