Major Designer Discounts

Kirna Zabete has kicked off their first ever warehouse sale, and happily, it's all being sold on their website. There are all the high-end, super-fashiony labels you'd expect from them, only reduced to much more palatable prices. The inventory is going fast, so be decisive if you see something you like in your size. Here, a few highlights:

1) Proenza Schouler twill dress(was $650, now $162.50): A great work or cocktails look in the most beautiful shade of crimson.

2) Stella McCartney jersey two-tier top(was $695, now $139): Flouncy accordion pleats and ruffles feel playfully sophisticated.

So what do we think about ... splatter paint?

I was an art major in college, and as lame as it sounds, I intentionally allowed paint to get all over my T-shirts. Dorky, I know, but I loved the way it looked. As with most things, however, it's often best to leave splatter painting to the professionals (my tees were way more messy than cool). I'm seriously coveting this splatter-print T-shirt from Forever 21, since it also appears to be freakishly soft. It's a bit like this dress on Fred Flare I blogged about a few weeks ago, but more understated. For $13.80, I definitely can't replicate the effect myself. But I wonder: Is this one of those retro trends I should just be avoiding altogether? What say you?

Beauty News Roundup!

- A former Miss Teen Florida USA tanned her way to victory—then she got skin cancer. Now she's fighting to ban underage indoor tanning. This—along with a new generation of pale, non-self-microwaved vampire-chic teen idols—is promising indeed. (BellaSugar)

- Marc Jacobs will be honored with the Hall of Fame Award at the Fragrance Foundation's 2009 Fifi Awards. As Knut fans, we're hoping he breaks out his polar bear costume for the after-party. (Perfume Shrine)

- Why hasn't your stupid boyfriend noticed your amazing new Posh-inspired, asymmetrical bob haircut? New research suggests that brains process hairstyles distinctly from other facial features—the technical term is "hair blindness." We still blame HBO On Demand. (New Scientist)

- Finally, an upside to the recession: beauty freebies galore! Beauty companies are more eager than ever for you to try (and then hopefully buy) their wares. Check out these awesome promotions from Kiehl's, Benefit Cosmetics, Clarins, and more. (Makeup Makes Me Happy)

- Once and for all—and we've been telling you the same thing—you cannot repair a split end. Incidentally, haircuts don't hurt. Get one. (We Love Beauty)

Friday web roundup: I fell in love with a weird hat

I read the fashion blog Style Bubble religiously. The girl who writes it is adorable and has an awesome, original way with clothes that I completely admire. This week, she introduced quirky hats from the line Tour de Force, and now I'm obsessed with wearing one to a wedding this summer. But, someone might need to stop this instinct stat.

The terrific vintage resource Shop My Closet has been especially rad lately—I might sell a cat for this

My Swell love affair

I've waxed on and on about great items on the website Swell before, but maybe because surf culture seems so far removed from NYC, I never remember to check back frequently enough. Every time I click on over, I'm blown away by the range of adorable and wearable stuff that they've put together—and not just for people who live on the beach. Plus, seemingly nothing breaks through the $100 barrier. Right now, I'm loving this simple, color-blocked cotton dress, this elephant-screened T-shirt (it looks super soft, and who doesn't love Dumbo?), and these royal blue sunglasses. And while it gives me shivers just to think about putting on a bathing suit right now, this Rip Curl suit is pretty freaking cute.

Which Celebrity Do (People Say) You Resemble?

It is fascinating when someone declares you look like a famous person, no? At least, that's what I imagine—I definitely do not have a celebrity face. In fact, I have been compared to celebrities on only two occasions in my life: once, unconvincingly, to Maggie Gyllenhaal; and once, uncharitably, to Alfred E. Neuman.

So I'm curious: Who's your celebrity doppelganger—good or bad?

—Cristina Mueller, senior beauty editor

Pretty in Pink

This Clu dress is an amalgamation of many, somewhat disparate things I love: ruffles, a dusty gray-pink color, scoopneck tees, full skirts, and silk. It all comes together here and totally works in this sweet, ballerina-ish way. It kind of reminds me of the outfit I used wear to dance class as a kid—a short-sleeved pink leotard and tutu. More grown-up obviously, but similarly swingy and fun to wear. I like the idea of adding a trench coat or my decade-old denim jacket to balance out the femininity of the dress; and as far as shoes go, I'm thinking strappy, tough flat sandals like this pair, featured in our accessories under $100 guide.
