Wanted: Running-around-town flats

I don't know if this is true for you, but running around the city in the summer really takes a toll on my flats, so I can't justify spending too much on them. My goal is to find the perfect pair: inexpensive, but with the ability to add some sophistication to my casual skinny-jeans-and-loose-white-tee look. Payless has some great collaborations going on with some of my favorite designers, like Lela Rose, and they've yielded some pretty stellar styles. Like these elegant greyones: aren't they divine?

This is why we think Kyung is a genius

It's arguably getting tiresome, but all of us here at Lucky love to wax on and on about Kyung Lee of Albertine boutique. The reason why is that she's always on hand to offer brilliant tips on making everything look better. Case in point: I am a bit of a moth to a flame when it comes to sequined vintage tops. And said tops are often way too costume-y to actually wear out of my apartment. (But while vacuuming? Why not.) I brought one piece—a standard butterfly top in black, silver and red, which you can snag at almost any vintage boutique for about $30—to Kyung, and she took some shears and unceremoniously cut it right down the front, transforming it into a cardigan. She didn't hem its rough edges and it's not even straight, but it looks amazing. Intentionally undone and haphazard, in a very cool sort of way. There's lots to learn from Kyung, really. The primary nugget being that clothing shouldn't be precious—feel free to modify until it works for you. Do you guys have any great off-the-cuff tailoring tricks?

The sexy dress debate

My friend and I are locked in a debate over this black American Apparel dress. We both love the sheer top portion, the sweetheart neckline, and the $46 price tag. However, more comfortable being bare, my friend argues that worn with opaque tights, it would be quite flirty and cute as a bar-hopping outfit. Whereas, I’m leaning towards writing off this piece as a little too much of everything: see-through, short, tight. At least for me. Can you guys settle this? Sexy or trying too hard to be sexy?

Beauty Drama in New Orleans!

Am I the dumbest beauty editor ever? Sometimes! I arrived yesterday in New Orleans for Jazz Fest and realized I'd forgotten to pack... beauty products. Most crucially, SUNSCREEN. I'm going to be outside all day interviewing cute girls about their festival style (everyone here wears HATS; I bought a straw fedora at Walgreens and am totally into it, even though it's vaguely K-Fed).

Anyway, I went to Walgreens on Canal Street here--it's in this super glamorous Art Deco building; so cool--and bought Aveeno SPF 70 sunscreen and Banana Boat Ultra Defense Faces SPF 30. Oh, AND Burt's Bees Hand Sanitizer, because anyone who reads the beauty blog knows how hideously acne-prone I am--and I am SO not smearing sunscreen all over my face with germy hands.

ANYWAY, I'm going to go wash off the 40 pounds of makeup I wore for my TV segment this morning (check out our Twitter) and then on to Jazz Fest! Tony Bennett and Bonnie Raitt today (oldschool=awesome); psyched for Kings of Leon tomorrow (and Bon Jovi, LOL) and Neil Young on Sunday!

Wanted: Long tops

When it's time for me to work on one of the magazine's big shopping trip stories, I spend a week planning my outfits. Here's why: I feel that I must look cute, and put together, but I also have to be armed for full-on contact with every single part of a store, nasty bits and all. I can often be found crawling around on the floor—under tables, behind racks—looking for outlets or interesting angles for the photographer to use. Which means that I stock up on durable, not super-precious tops that are long, because I really don't want to be flashing my lower back at the photographer and his assistant. I think this painterly plaid top via Baltimore-based boutique chain South Moon Under might be perfect—what do you guys think?Read More
