Lucky Near You: San Francisco and the Bay Area

Our favorite neighborhood for truly amazing vintage home accessories has added a quirky new gallery on Vermont Street called Obsolete. The second location of owner Ray Azoulay's popular shop in Venice, CA, it's packed with curiosities displayed in the most crave-worthy manner, unusual original art, and a strange-but-lovely lamp selection. This powerhouse block--Obsolete's located right next to Blackman Cruz and Therien--definitely demands a visit.

The Perfect Bathing Suit Cover Up Revealed

It's officially summer and I still have zero vacation plans. I'm determined to log beach time somewhere though, and when I do, I'm going to take Garconiera's gauzy cotton sarong with me. I have a bunch of solid-colored bikinis (black, peacock blue, navy, red) that I like to mix-and-match, and this would work with any combination of them, either knotted around the waist as it's shown here, or criss-crossed around the neck as a halter. The intricate floral print and little baubles on the hem make it look like it could've come from a far away bazaar. 25park.com has two versions, the other in this warm golden palette, and both ring in at a very moderate $35.Read More

SUPERMODEL ALERT

Lauren Hutton, looking stunningly gorgeous in super La Dolce Vita red-check dress (not the one pictured here, mind you) by Michael Kors—her body is incredible, despite being laid up after her huge surfing accident (at 65! looking hotter than hot and having SURFING accidents!), her hair is perfect beachy California tousledness, and her face is un-blown-up and un-Cubist and utterly natural and beautiful. I want to be her when I grow up—an unlikely scenario, given my never-been-a-supermodel reality. The natural, glowy skin involves lots of her skincare-inflected makeup, which is undetectable on, yet works miracles, especially the Sheer Concealer. Do a stripe of the stuff down your nose, blend, and your nose looks instantly more petite, and your whole face looks more balanced. It’s kind of incredible.

Je regrette...shopping the Paris flea market

Clignancourt, the enormous Paris flea market (also known as Les Puces, featured in Lucky's Paris shopping guide) is one of the most amazing places I've ever seen. Instead of a huge parking lot with a zillion cluttered tables--the way we often experience flea markets in the U.S.--it is actually an entire thrift VILLAGE of lanes and alleys filled with tiny shacks, each decorated by the purveyor according to the shop's theme. It's like vintage shopping heaven. It's also completely overwhelming, especially if you're jet lagged and/or A.D.D. There were so many things my husband and I wanted, ranging from sleek mid-century luggage to antler chandeliers to the most awesomely large clock from an old French barbershop. My biggest regret, however, is that I did not buy the Chanel bag I saw at a stall run by a glamorous-but-cranky old woman who scoffed at my flat sandals (and perhaps my whole outfit) when I walked in. The purse--a classic quilted style with a chain strap, priced at 210 Euros--is usually not my thing, but subsequent to our flea market day, I saw hordes of beautiful French girls rocking it messenger-style with skinny jeans, fitted blazers and worn-in flats and realized it is the most perfect bag of all time. I seriously must own one, from eBay, though it looks like I'll pay a heckuva lot more than 210 Euro. C'est la vie...

Lucky Near You: Seattle

For many of us in Seattle, it was a sad day when Central District store Last Waltz closed doors last month. Fortunately, the woman behind the shop has popped up online, selling her carefully selected vintage wares at www.splendidred.etsy.com. More good news: flea market-style sales of the vintage goods will be held monthly in the former Last Waltz location (now a multi-use/events space run by Gossamer Collective), so you can still peruse everything in person.
