HAIR ADVICE, PLEASE

Anyone who reads this blog knows that I have the thick, untamable, hugely-snarled-and-dreadlock-prone hair of your average feral child. Unless I have truly just stepped out of a salon, I never look as though I just stepped out of the salon; even then, hours later, I look like I've just stepped out my abandoned doghouse in eastern Europe, possibly to play Ultimate Frisbee in a Phish concert parking lot.

SO. I want to hear about all of the amazing, sleekifying, detangling, super-softening hair products that you're obsessed with. What REALLY works for you?

Cheap Finds in Florida

I spent the past weekend in Southern Florida, alternating between heatstroke outdoors and frostbite indoors. I finally convinced my boyfriend to take me shopping to get a hooded sweatshirt- little did we know that is a near impossible item to find in the south in July. After a few failed attempts elsewhere, we stumbled into Kmart, and as I was passing through the junior section I found the cutest sundresses, at $10 a pop! They turned out to be perfect for tossing on as beach cover-ups or poolside.

So Much Chicer Than A Paper Sack

Our market director, Anne Keane, makes fun of me on a daily basis. Despite owning a closet full of tote bags, I seem to end up dragging my gym clothes and assorted other junk around in various shopping bags. I can't explain this strange behavior other than to say that the aforementioned closet of totes, impossibly, doesn't seem to contain just the right bag. Most are too small or too big or the handles are too short to fit over my shoulder. Coming into our office earlier, I saw our special sections director, Liz Kiernan, carrying what I believe is that elusive just right bag. Made by Lucky good friend, Anne Johnston Albert, for her line Martin, this black canvas bag, I believe, will spare me Anne Keane's ridicule and may even inspire her respect.

New Summer Bag Obsession

My summer bag obsession is a line called Tarah Smith. Based out of Los Angeles, Tarah expertly mixes different materials and colors to create funky fun bags you just want to immediately pick up and carry. The aesthetic is city girl infused with California cool. The line has you covered from little clutches to great weekender bags and everything in between. My favorite right now is this cross body fringe bag. I want to toss in a lip gloss and a few bucks, throw it on over an comfy tee shirt and jean shorts and have a laid back Saturday boardwalk excursion.

Birthday Shopping

I love birthdays, especially my own. Every year I start planning well in advance for a big dinner with friends and I always buy myself a fun party dress for the occasion. This year is a big one-- 25--and I need something extra special. I've had my eye on this Gryphon sequin tunic for weeks and it's FINALLY on sale which means I can FINALLY afford it! Now the only problem will be keeping it in my closet until September!

Etsy: '90s grunge styles that actually fit

Grunge was the look when I was in college and, while I clumsily rocked flannel and oversized blazers and Docs and men's undershirts and cutoffs (sometimes altogether), my biggest problem with the clothes was how they swallowed you whole and/or made you look bigger than you were. It's a little more than 15 years later, and grunge is totally back, but, this time, designers are smartly adding more femininity and refinement to the trend, especially when it comes to fit.
