Last season, Brooklyn-by-way-of-Kenya based line Suno (designed by film director-turned-designer Max Osterweis) was made entirely out of vibrantly printed vintage kangas. Osterweis had collected the kangas (they're kind of like cotton sarongs) on trips to visit his mother in Kenya; fair-trade workers in Nairobi then stitched them together into fitted blazers, batwing sleeve blouses and barely-there minidresses.
This morning, what arrived on the shop floor at Opening Ceremony for fall '09 can only be described as Suno 2.0: the same gorgeously bold vintage-y ethnic patterns printed and sewn by the same local factories, but on brand new fabrics. So, happily, there are more of these covetable pieces--which still feel totally cool and one of a kind, are socially conscious, and retail from $150 on up to $600--to go around. Here's a sneak peak from the fall lookbook.

It's true. I've waxed rhapsodic about all things red about a zillion times. Red is my hangover helper, it's the color of 30 percent of my footwear, and I rarely leave the house without its bold, transformative shade on my lips. This season, however, I'm looking to red in a more grownup way. I want the power red of Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl as she glides through the work party making deals and eating men. I want Joan from Mad Men 's hypnotic wiggle dress red. I want the red that says, "Yes, gentlefolk, I'm fun and sexy, but I've got control of this room." I want red wool. Today on eBay, I found some pieces that fit my mission nicely, including this Pendleton wrap jacket(with jeans and loafers, all Sunday-casual like?), a perfect little Dior blazer, an expensive-but-unbelievably-adorable dress from Stella McCartney, a sophisticated chain-belt dress by Milly, and this fabulous vintage secretary suitwhich I'd belt and wear with tights and shiny, sexy black boots.

I have a genuine love for catalogs, I do: I love coming home to find them in the mailbox and head straight to my sofa to pore over them page by page. But right now I'm maybe loving online catalogs even more--you get to turn the pages and see all the pretty imagery of the tangible paper copies, but are just a simple click away from that object of desire.

My friend Shana sent me the following email yesterday: "Is white in season at all? I have a white dress I haven't worn--like ever--because I'm so afraid of all the fashion taboos I'll break. How far into September can I wear it?"
In case the rest of you out there have similar concerns, I thought I'd address these questions here.
White is one of my year-round favorites--it's such a classic, flatteringcolor. All that stuff about retiring it post-Labor Day seems reallyoutdated. Even something as light and lacy as the dress by JMM picturedhere (and now 30 percent off at shopbop) can work in colder months whenpaired with a leather jacket and thick black tights (I actually lovethis contrast. Just add a slip if the fabric is sheer). I plan onextending the white Helmut Lang jeans I bought earlier in the summerstraight into the fall, layered with cashmere cardigans and wedgebooties. The key to not looking summery? Keep the palette neutral, asopposed to adding brights or pastels.Read More
