Perfect Hair for the Heat!

(Sartorialist, Garance Dore )

Suddenly, out of nowhere , it's starting to really feel like summer here in New York, like, 90+ degrees. That's why I'm obsessed with this hair look for keeping it cool. It's pretty foolproof--all you need are Goody clear hair elastics and a spritz of texturizing spray to keep your hair from slipping out (this one from Garnier is fantastic). Scrape it all up, and you're good; I say, the messier the better.

And is it just me or is the girl on the right telling a 'French Tina Fey' story?

Also: Face-framing braids are another great option for the oppressive heat--check out our how-to video here.

Collaboration alert! Yael Aflalo and The Reformation for Urban Outfitters

As reported over at The Thread, Yael Aflealo has a new collaboration underfoot to join her other capsule collection with Urban Outfitters (Nom de Plume Yaya)--this one is via her new boutique, The Reformation, one of my favorite new spots on New York's LES (read about it in the September New York Shopping Trip here). I love it for its slightly gothic, deeply feminine pieces--most of which feature lace or silk in some incarnation, usually as an inset back panel. It's all really well-priced, too. The same aesthetic is on display in the UO line, Reformed, particularly in this gorgeous floral-print top. Love! Read More

Perfect fall bootie=Under $100

I actually had a dream last night that I couldn't find the right shoe for a pair of teal (?) cigarette-leg pants. Beyond the outfit, the shoes I was trying on were straight out of my closet, and none were acceptable. I needed an ankle boot, of which I only have ONE pair. This dearth of acceptable options is probably because the flat and sneaker portion of my shoe wardrobe gets most of my attention. I love this particular pair from Jeffrey Campbell on Need Supply because they look really forward and fancy but they're only $98--they'll be perfect with tights and a dress, or hidden under a pair of wide-legged trousers. My Dream Wardrobe: Phi's Fall Collection

It seems like it took forever for summer to arrive in New York. Now it's here and all I want to do is wear fall clothing. Before the start of every season, I always ask myself "if I could only wear one designer every day for the next 3 months, who would it be?" Well I really better start saving BIG TIME because all I want to wear is Phi.

It started with these boots and escalated to the entire collection. Zippers! Leather! Sequins! Shearling! I'm dizzy just thinking about it.

Help! Battling Blow Dryer Options

My blow dryer died last night. It was, I can assure you, not from overuse: Once it's 90 degrees outside, I dispense with heat styling unless compelled by duty (i.e. last night's formal event). Still, the farsighted part of me would like to buy a new blow dryer so that I might have something to do during the winters to come. I'm thinking high wattage and please, God, make it small because I can't fit another beauty item in the bathroom. BaByliss? Barbar Eco? Vidal Sassoon? Conair Infiniti? Revlon Tourmaline? Given so many options, do you have any suggestions?

Sneak Peek: S2VS Spring/Summer 2010

Last night at the spring/summer 2010 preview of utilitarian label S2VS, guests to the Soho Grand Yard were met by a striking tableau of fresh-faced guys and gals, dressed smartly in understated, somewhat nautical get-ups. The brand's designers say they were influenced by "sailing styles in the late 60's combined with Ivy League prep style from the same era."

Their inspirations were apparent in the crisp polos and jaunty linen pants elevated by details like welted pockets, drawstrings, contoured seams, rolled cuffs and over-sized paper-bag waists. Though the two-year-old line's primary focus has always been menswear, last night's dabbling into womenswear felt decidedly right, the perfect embodiment of the prep-school/urban-cool spirit of S2VS, marking perhaps an intriguing new direction for the brand.
