Trend For Fall: Roper Boots

My friend Carrie, one of the most urbane people I know was, improbably, raised on a huge working cattle farm somewhere in the middle of Kansas. Now, for many years firmly rooted in NY, she's shed almost every vestige of her mid-western life (other than her wholesome good looks and iron-clad work ethic). From a recent conversation with her and her sister Tammy about their teenage farm wardrobe, apparently one of the first things to go after they moved away was the regionally ubiquitous Roper boot. Hailing from suburban NJ, I had absolutely no idea what Roper boots were and when they described them to me, I thought they sounded cute. They assured me that these boots were terribly unstylish and the farthest thing from cute. It turns out, I beg to differ. In fact, had a similar pair in junior high (we just lumped them intothe cowboy boot category, so I didn't know their proper name). I couldsee bringing theseback this fall with skinny dark jeans or even an oversized flannelshirt, denim mini and some tights. I'm sure Carrie will think I'm crazyand it's probably the equivalent of her starting to sport an armload ofMadonna-esque black rubber bangles, ever-present on the wrists of alleast coast teenage girls in the 80's.
