Maayan Zilberman's European Vacation: Basel Flea Market--Out of Time, Out of (My) Mind
One of my favorite types of collectibles is mechanical parts and trims relating to anything having to do with race cars or aviation. I love fashion that is somehow influenced by this aesthetic, but not overtly.
So I was thrilled to find a stall at the Saturday Morning Flohmarkt (flea market) in Basel, Switzerland, where this sweet old man had organized everything in canisters--watch straps, dials, second hands, chains, etc. I got especially excited about the grosgrain '40s-era watchstraps that will find their way into next season's bras and garters for The Lake & Stars.
I was also thrilled that the vendor recognized my vintage '90s Gaultier sunglasses, inspired by the very items he was selling at his booth. They were a gift from my friend and travel companion who designs Proenza Schouler sunglasses.
