Maayan Zilberman's European Vacation: Fascinating (and Fabulous) Food Discoveries
I've been developing my own line of cakes (Wavecake--coming soon!). Traveling abroad really gives you the opportunity to see some unusual materials and unorthodox techniques, something that inspires me both in food preparation and, of course, in fashion.
Three things that caught my eye:
1. I love anything that doesn't subscribe to the notion that sweet foods need to be prissy; it's kind of the same way I like to approach lingerie.
This chocolate boutique Artisan du Chocolat in London's Soho district was an inspiration. I love their sense of humor, as evidenced in this box of chocolate South Sea Pearls (the only chic way to wear them, as far as I'm concerned).
2. As they say, what happens in Europe, stays in Europe. I used this mantra as an excuse for a dangerous degree of caloric intake.
At London's Sun in Splendour, the fried haddock seemed more like fried whale shark. I also can't help but wonder why Brits don't wear more yellow and orange--all their food is in this color family.
3. Food in toothpaste-style tubes fall into the category of "I hate it so much I love it." These colorful tubes, influenced by 1960s Swiss graphic design, house varieties of flavored mayonnaise. They have lemon, pesto, avocado, chili and my favorite, salmon(?!?).
The packaging is so much like other un-frilly items I keep in my kitchen--they'd look great on a shelf next to my ceramic subway sandwich and Swiss chrome piggy bank from WWII.
