Madewell's Head Stylist Spills on her Favorite Vintage Sources
Madewell is about as vintage as it gets--we were founded in 1937 as a heritage workwear company (get the scoop here). So it's no surprise that we're obsessed with all things old and authentic. That said, we're big fans of vintage shopping, and these are some of our favorite NYC spots, courtesy of Lisa Schulner, our head stylist (i.e., the girl everyone in the office wants to dress like).
The Brooklyn Flea
I have a soft spot for this iconic Brooklyn market, which always proves to be a fun Saturday surprise: Not only is it practically located in my backyard, but Madewell partnered with The Brooklyn Flea this past summer to sell some of its amazing vintage pieces in our Soho store. When you visit, don't miss Joan, one of my favorite vendors, with her bright red tent just inside the gate. Among her stellar past-era pieces, she also sells custom-made dresses from Ghana, and they're priced so neighbor-friendly you feel like you're at a tag sale.
Narnia
It's my favorite vintage shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It's a magical space. The owners love any piece that has a backstory, whether it's a pair of men's pajama pants from Timbuktu or Marni dress from 1998.
Shareen
This secret LA vintage source just opened a branch in New York. It's on the edge of Chelsea, and it's filled with racks and racks of quirky, girly, 80's-leaning pieces at Midwestern prices. Shareen, the owner, has a great eye and will happily style looks for you on the spot. A tip: wear your nice underwear if you're planning to try something on since there's no dressing rooms (the store is like a giant, well-decorated closet and no men are allowed inside). Also, the hours are limited--it's pretty much only open on weekends--so check before you visit.
