Postcard from Milan: Prada and "Moschino"
Fashion director Hope Greenberg reports from the runways of Milan.
There's always tons of anticipation before the Prada show. You can guess all you want, but it's unlikely you'll ever come up with anything close to what Miuccia Prada has cooked up for the season.
We walked into the dark, cavernous space with a black-and-white marblecheckerboard floor and images from a glamorous Italian palazzointerspersed with Mediterranean beach scenes projected onto the walls. So, who would have anticipated the opening looks of grey duchess satinsuiting with scissored-off hems?
Cropped a-line jackets, skinnyknee-length shorts and stiff vests were Prada's modern-day work looks. The business wardrobe then gave way to the play wardrobe, where dresses, coats and rompers were photo-printed with palm tree-filled beachscapessimilar to those on the walls.
There was nothing tricky about the ideas, but it was all beyond fabulous. The lucite-heeled and plastic-strappedshoes, some with crystal beads dangling off, hinted at the final looks, which were simple white underpinnings overlaid with skirts, vests andtunics made of intricately wired chandelier crystals.
Kate and Rocco from Paul Wilmot PR took us out for a delicious dinnerat Le Lenghe, a favorite of the fashion crowd. I think the waiterslaugh at what seems to be a secret dictate that all Americans orderthe "Moschino salad," which is not even on the menu. It's mixed greens, hearts of palm, corn and parmesan. You could probably get it at anysalad bar in New York, but of course it's much more exotic in Milan.
