Yay or Nay: Wearing Black To A Wedding

Earlier this year I interviewed Monique Lhuillier for a story, who told me she didn't think it was appropriate to wear black to a wedding. And even though she's certainly a pro at all things bridal, I can't help but question her edict.

While I totally see her point about black being a severe color rather than a celebratory one, I've broken her rule at least a few times and hadn't ever given it thought until our conversation. I wonder if it depends on the context: like, what about a nighttime wedding in the city in the fall and winter months? Yesterday I started pondering this issue again, when reader cmcarthy11 asked me for advice on what to wear to a wedding next month in Philadelphia, and already specified no black. I myself am off to a wedding tomorrow in Savannah and was thinking of wearing this black strapless Phillip Lim dress (the proportions look really weird in this photo but the smocked top stretches like a rubber band to fit snug across the chest). I'd argue that the sparkly bits and floral pattern make it more festive, but I'm still second guessing this choice. What do you guys think?

PS: On a side note, if you have any favorite things to do/see/eat in Savannah, let me know. It'll be a quick trip, but I've never been and I'm hoping to pack in as much as possible!
