Etsy: On becoming a kitchen grownup

Yesterday, while I was emptying the dishwasher and stuffing mismatched, misshapen plates, cups, glasses and flatware into any nook I could find in our limited-space Brooklyn kitchen, I had a revelation: We need less stuff. And also, we need to replace the stuff we have. Basically, we just need to do a kind of kitchen Freaky Friday with a couple who own nice, sleek things and not too many of them.

Perhaps a couple who wouldn't own a hilarious knife with the monkey on it, or a chipped Queen Elizabeth mug from 1980, or any of the million forks, spoons and, weirdly, baby spoons that no one knows the provenance of, but that keep getting used to scoop out cat food. You know who doesn't need a set of silverware? OUR CATS.

Anyway, I realize I write a lot here about how I live badly, about how bras attack me and such and I hope you're not all feeling like you've been reading a frustrating Cathy cartoon ("ACCCK! I am bad at things! Again!") for two years. Because there's always a bright spot. Once I clear out the Hoarders-level chaos in my kitchen, I am going to reward myself with a set of these super-cool, fun, made-to-order mugs (or maybe bowls?) from the excellent Etsy store Circa Ceramics. And you should, too. Or at least we should all think about them as possible gifts.
