You Asked...We Got Savannah Miller to Answer
The Twenty8Twelve creative director was in NYC last week to give us a preview of her tomboyishly romantic label's spring 2010 line, and to catch her co-designing little sister, Sienna, performing on Broadway. At the cozy Royalton Hotel, in between chatting about the best eBay finds, favorite photographers, and where to go shopping while in Manhattan (Rag & Bone and Intermix), we asked Savannah the questions you submitted to us via Twitter:
Lucky: How would you describe your personal style right now?
Savannah: I'm going through a slight '80s obsession, which is a bit strange for me because I've always been quite classic. I know it's very on trend, this stud thing, but there's a hardness about the '80s and a sportiness that I really love. I'm suddenly into utility things. I keep it simple, though: I don't really accessorize, and I stick to great statement pieces. I love things that have a bit of a twist: like if I wore a plain white shirt, I'd pair it with an acid wash pair of jeans. I'm really inspired by the movie Badlands with Sissy Spacek.
Lucky: How much of spring 2010, then, is inspired by what you yourself want to wear?
Savannah: About 50 percent. We have a very broad customer base--we dress women from the age of like 15 to the age of 65. Literally. No joke. Primarily, though, if we wouldn't wear it, we tend to not put it through. At the same time, we don't design something just because we want to wear it. We're not that narcissistic. We think about our woman. It's so important that people wear designer labels and make it work for them, like if a woman just picks a pair of jeans from our line and chucks it in with her other stuff. That's what makes it unique to you--clothes really do project who you are.
Lucky: Do you look at street style blogs?
Savannah: I look at a lot of street style blogs, I really love blogs, it's really inspiring and really exciting...but so does everyone else. I've started going back to my library, actually, and looking at all my old books, at Malick Sidibe and photos of the 1950s which really inspired this collection quite heavily. I love street style blogs for styling references.
Lucky: What else is in your library right now?
Savannah: I've got this book about Glam Rock which is all about David Bowie that I'm really into. The winter [2010] collection is inspired by that.
Lucky: What's your favorite piece from the spring '10 collection?
Savannah: The Miller dress (pictured above)--I love it.
