Beauty Shame--In the Conde Nast Cafeteria!

Reading Cristina's post on pet peeves reminded me of an embarrassing moment last year, having lunch with friends in our company's cafeteria. "Aw, she was doing her makeup on the subway? I hate that," one said, while the other nodded vehemently.

"Is it really so bad?" I asked, to a brief radio silence, after which both of them cracked up. "You're that girl?" one said, and I sheepishly realized...I kind of was.I have a bad habit of applying mascara or gloss while waiting on the platform (look, I'm not an early riser! Some days the extra sleep just wins out).

Where--between a swipe of chapstick, and the lovely gentlemen who (I swear) spent the duration of one commute clipping his nails--do you draw the line?
