Are You A Snow or Sand Person?

If I'm anything, it's definitely not the latter. In fact, I dread beach vacations, not only because I'm super fair (and cower under umbrellas for shade) but because my hair gets wild-child frizzy, and not in a fun way. Plus, I have bangs. I just never look good. Or sun-kissed. How do those people do it? But visits to the Maine ocean are part of every summer now, and I feel like it's wise to start building my arsenal for staying protected--and as aesthetically appealing as possible (it's never going to be glamorous people, trust me).

When I was a child, my parents put me in long-sleeved T-shirts and hospital scrubs before I was allowed anywhere near the water. It's no wonder I was such a bad snorkeler. The fish must have been terrified when they saw my weird, undulating mass approach. So as grateful as I am that I never suffered sunburn in my formative years, I think their insistence on extreme discomfort created an abhorrence to cover-ups. Because somehow I don't own any.

This is all going to change though, now that I've seen the cover-ups from the Liya Kebede-helmed collection LemLem, which I found this past weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the very adorable lingerie shop Derriere de Soie. Despite the fact that I must have 50-plus scarves, I was really tempted by this option, which is edged in a tiny strip of fuchsia. So lightweight and chic, plus all purchases support artisan communities in Africa. This cover-up would probably be a wiser purchase, and I can almost justify the price tag of this one, because it's long enough that I could wear it straight to lunch post-beach.

What are your tips for staying chic despite all the elements of the ocean working against you?
