3 Unconventional Ways to the Perfect Summer Hair
Dry Shampoo.
Colorist Leslie Shores suggests swapping out your regular shampoo for a dry one every week or two in the summer. It reduces the oiliness created by sweat and humidity, and it saves time spent washing and restyling your hair. Even if you just touch up your bangs, an option like Klorane's Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo is a great hold-over between regular washes.
And if you're really DIY, Shores says, you can substitute in instant oatmeal flakes. Just rub a few pinches of oatmeal through your hair, and brush it out over the sink.
Colorist Stacie Dybala gives a recipe for sexy, beachy waves: Mix one teaspoon of sea salt into a four-ounce spray bottle filled with water and a splash of coconut oil (found at Whole Foods and health food stores).
"Watch the proportion of oil," Dybala advises. "Coarser and curlier hair can tolerate more than fine hair can, but still, less is more; it's truly the salted water that will give the hair that authentic grit."
The Tap-water Trick.
Stylist Lisette Dezort suggests putting your head under the faucet before jumping in the pool.
"Dry hair attracts moisture," she explains. "The hair will always absorb the first water it comes in contact with and saturate itself. Think of it like a sponge. If there's tap water already there, the chlorinated water won't be absorbed as much."
Dezort also recommends a gentle clarifier like Kerastase Bain Apres-Soleil to remove chlorine and product buildup. What's with All the Spam in the Comments Section?
