Counterintuitive Sexy Hair Trick

I was hanging out with a friend of mine the other day and couldn't stop noticing how amazingly wavy her normally straight hair was. The waves weren't overly sweeping or curly or pageanty, but that beachy kind that has an almost-crimped feel to it.

Turns out she's using a straightener (of all things) to create the look. With a 1/2" straightener, she takes a strand and clamps down about 2" from the ends and twists outward--like a curling iron--until about 3" from the roots. Then she loosely opens the straightener and pulls it down, smoothing over any wonky-looking creases. The effect is kind of like this shot from the Ruffian show--loose, wispy, and glamorously imperfect.
