The Betty Draper Hair Experiment

My friend Schuyler went to a Rat Pack-themed party on Saturday night, so she printed out this picture of Betty Draper, bought a bag of synthetic extensions (a little coarser and easier to work with for making a humongous bun), and some real hair (to cover the bun and create the braid) at The Hair Shop, and carted it all off to Frankie at Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills.

"I can't tell you how much it hurt--my hair was pulled back so tightly to support the whole thing, it was like getting a face-lift," she says. "Seriously. Now I know why Betty Draper is so mean."What made it all worth it: two Advils and the zillion compliments she got--from men and women. "I have to say, I'm so glad I did it," Schuyler says. "Despite the pain part and despite the fact that I had to stay up an extra hour taking out all the hairpins."

Anyway, models at Behnaz Sarafpour--who got cool, intricate, S-shaped French braids for the show during New York Fashion Week--were obviously feeling the same way.
