Look for Less: Royal Jewels

We are loving the beautiful, personal and timeless pieces of jewelry that Kate, her mother Carole and her sister Pippa all wore this morning. The delicate baubles added a finishing touch to each of their dresses without distracting from the overall look (no spotlight-stealing bling here). All three Middleton women wore small drop earrings. Kate complemented her vintage Cartier tiara with a simple pair of diamond earrings--a gift from her parents and inspired by her new coat of arms. Pippa's pearl drops blended beautifully with her white column dress, and Carole matched her pale blue ensemble with an earring and necklace set. Well, we've tracked down the royal look at a commoner's price. Check out these FantasyJewelryBox.com steals below!

Royal Wedding Glamour: The Hair! The Makeup! The Brows! (And Essie)

I think I speak for many people when I say that I was over the royal wedding coverage weeks ago--to me, the morning news was a comedy routine of what-royal-wedding-related-thing-will-they-think-of-next. But I woke up early this morning, totally forgetting today was the day, because my building was turning off the water at 7:30am for water main construction--which is so unglamorous--and then I turned on the TV to see the absolute glamour of Kate and William's glowing faces in a carriage bound for Buckingham Palace.

The gown was so perfectly simple but dreamy, and the hair and makeup certainly fit. I love that she wore her hair down--I think it's modern, youthful, and makes her seem more real despite her now being a princess. Her makeup really reflected what a natural beauty she is: just a bit of rosy cheeks, defined brows (maybe a bit too defined), and a sweep of shimmery shadow. And while William struggled to slide on her wedding band (I watched the replay, not the real thing), I eyed Kate's perfectly manicured nails. Turns out, she chose the pinky, sheer Essie Allure--a long-time favorite for brides everywhere (and the go-to for Accessories Director Julia Kalachnikoff).

How Did Pippa Get So Tan?

I'm nominating Pippa as the dark horse of the royal wedding. I'll be honest, I'm a little late to the party, and just realized that Pippa is, in fact, Kate Middleton's glowy younger sister. And the word Pippa is just really fun to say, as is her amazingly-even tan. What do you think? Is it fake--maybe she used EVOLV (the latest in super-believable spray tans)? Or real? In a week-in-Tortola kind of way. Either way, I'm Pippa-ing it up today by dusting on a bit of Guerlain Terracotta bronzing powder.

How an Out-Of-Work Plumber Went to Coachella and Saved Five People's Lives

I (along with Rihanna, Pharrell, and Mary J. Blige, among others) heard this story last night at the DKMS gala in New York--and it devastated me, in a good way:

A very cute plumber in California had lost his job because of the economy, had nothing to do, and so decided to go to Coachella. There he found Sean Penn's volunteer bus and decided, why not?

The Sean Penn bus took him all over the U.S., doing all kinds of cool volunteer work. In Texas they learned about donating bone marrow to save the lives of leukemia patients. 6 out of 10 patients who need a donation die waiting for a match. Donating takes a single day out of your life, and you're fine the next day, and the person you donated your cells to is more than fine--they live, where they'd have otherwise died. All you have to do is get the inside of your cheek swabbed with a cotton swab and they put you in a database to see if you're ever a match for someone.

The plumber turned out (a year or so later) to be a match for a mid-western mother of three, and his donation saved her life.

They met for the first time last night, and when I tell you there was not a dry eye in the house, I mean the table full of beauty editors, including myself, was a river of smudged mascara. It was so incredible. She and her husband and their three adorable children met this stranger who truly saved their lives.

Do it! Imagine what it would feel like to save someone's life! Go to GetSwabbed.org, they'll send you a swab, you send it back & wait & hope for a match!

I think it's time to pull out some of the crazier bags in my collection, andwhat better way to kick things off than with my copper chainmail Margielabag? It's especially fun to carry on a sunny day because it practicallyglows. On an side note, changing my bag every day for the last 10 days hasactually pared down the amount of crap I usually carry, which has been anice bonus. But on the other hand, there are bags covering practically everyinch of my apartment and my husband is becoming less and less amused. Twentydays to go.
