Four Awesome NYC Spa Treatments

There's so much more to the world of New York City spa treatments than the standard 60-minute back massage. These four treatments guarantee a relaxing--or invigorating, or free!--update on what we've come to expect from our local spas.

The Moroccan Hammam: The Exotic One

The gorgeous, shimmering hammam treatment room, which recently opened in The Spa at Trump SoHo, is presented as the city's first authentic hammam, with a traditional bathing-and-exfoliation practice imported from Morocco and Turkey. Here's how it works: You'll lie across a heated marble stone, and an attendant will alternately douse you in cascades of water and scrub your skin smooth. The Spa at Trump SoHo offers both the Moroccan and Turkish varieties, but we prefer the Moroccan one ($160), which includes the application of clarifying Moroccan black soap, made from crushed olives.

Caudalie Vinotherapie Facial: The One for Wine Lovers

Little-known fact: Antioxidant-rich grapes are massively beneficial to skin--which makes standout skincare brand Caudalie's grape-centric facials a must. The top option here is the Premier Cru treatment ($350), which takes its name from Caudalie's bestselling antiaging cream. It's made from the grapes of the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte vineyards in Bordeaux, near the first Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa; consider this a bit of la vie francaise without leaving home.

The Fresh Facial: The Free One

Here's the most amazing thing about a Fresh facial: It's free. We know, it sounds too good to be true--so here's how it works. You purchase a 45-minute Fresh facial--perhaps the Umbrian Clay Purify & Balance ($75), or the Soy Skin Essentials ($50); each is customized to complement your skin. So far, so good--but the great part comes after the facial, when you can redeem the cost of your facial in products. We'd choose the Brown Sugar Candle, or the new Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment. Our strategy: Schedule a facial--and use the product credit to stock up on birthday presents.

Thai Yoga Massage: The Ultimate Stretch

You know that amazing, mini massage that comes at the end of a great yoga class from a hands-on teacher? That can last for 80 whole minutes with a Thai yoga massage ($320) at the super-luxe Spa at Mandarin Oriental, which is like a private class consisting entirely of perfectly aligned adjustments. You'll wear regular yoga clothes for the session, and the therapist will move your body into each position--consider it a slow-motion workout and massage in one.
