Second NYC Madewell Store Opens With a Cool Party and Cooler Clothes

Madewell feted its brand-new store in the Flatiron District last night and, boy, was it a party. You had the performance art sensation the Bumbys in one corner doing "appearance appraisals," cool musicians like Annie Clark from St. Vincent and Eleanor Friedberger from the Fiery Furnaces DJing in another, and fashionable guests like Alexa Chung and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld mingling throughout.

The two-story, lofty space is gorgeous--a beaming chandelier, intricate murals--and a spacious 6,500 square feet, which makes it all the better to showcase all the brand's covetable clothes and hand-selected curious. The expansive jean bar faces racks of the line's signature breezy plaid shirts and tribal-looking graphic flounce skirts (a must in our summer wish book). Plus, local talent is well represented in a section called "Hometown Heroes," featuring goods by Wool and the Gang, JF & Sons, Other Music and Erie Basin. This hometown sentiment extended to the food last night, too, with delicious cupcakes from BabyCakes, pretzels from Sigmund and cookies from Momofuku. That latter of which, well, we just might have had too many of (if there is such a thing).
