Guest Blogger Piper Weiss' Most Fashionable Moms, Part One

My name's Piper and I'm a mom style addict. Two years ago, I found my mom's old photo album from the late '60s, and ever since I've been collecting vintage photos around the world for my blog, and for the back page of Lucky every month. Some of my favorite photos and stories were compiled in my new book My Mom Style Icon . In honor of Mother's Day (it's on Sunday, people!), I'll be some featuring some of my favorite muses from the book all week. I'll also attempt to re-create the looks, decade by decade, starting with the 1950s. Disclaimer: Nothing comes close to the originals. But a girl can try.

Mom: Maureen, Era: 1950s

When her husband landed a job in Fiji in the early '50s, Maureen Hart left her cardigans and wool overcoats behind in England and took up a needle and thread. "My mother made everything, including her suits," says Debra, who was just two when she took up island living. "She used to write and ask my grandmother to send her patterns, mainly from Vogue and McCall's. She adapted designs and patterns herself because on the island things were quite difficult to get."

One of my favorite photos in the book is of Maureen, in her zebra-print bikini on a sailboat she and her husband used for island hopping. It has that blown-out beauty of vintage photos, but her homemade suit might be something you'd see on the shores of the South of France today. This was long before women were wearing bikinis without ridicule, but zebra print? Total rebel.

When I went a-hunting for versions of Maureen's suit, I found two that are pretty close to the original. They also bear the label of two of today's biggest designers. Great minds.

Lucky columnist Piper Weiss, founder of the incredible blog My Mom the Style Icon and author of the book of the same name, will be guest blogging for us all week, right up until Mother's Day. For more mom muses pick up the book here .

Also, if you live in New York, come out and celebrate moms with Piper on Monday, May 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the Coach store in SoHo, or on Thursday, May 5, from 7-9, at PowerHouse Books in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Some of the book's contributors will be there, along with their moms!
