Sample Sale Lowdown: Rag & Bone

For us, Rag & Bone's biannual sales discount blowout is one of our most hotly anticipated events of the sample sale season. Located a stone's throw away from the brand's studio, the label has installed its offerings in a large bi-level space in the Chelsea Market. The women's section is on the upper level with footwear, while men's apparel is set up beneath.

The sale features mostly spring/summer 2011 items, though all seasons are represented. We recommend a careful perusal of the racks, since some one-of-a-kind samples are sprinkled within with regular stock. And, if you're one of the lucky few, you could end up with a slick metal yarn weave techno Combo Tailcoat jacket--only six were made. We spied some Rag & Bone employees fighting over the few that were left. Cooler heads prevailed in the shoe section, where we salivated over the Rag & Bone Sperry Topsiders, pastel nubuck oxfords, and the flat Moto boots,but were slightly perplexed when we spotted the sign stating that Italian shoes are $350 while other shoes are $195. But how to distinguish between "Italian" and "others?" Luckily for us, a friendly staffer explained that runway shoes (mainly the "Nima" flats and "Isis" heels) are considered Italian and all others are not. (Got it!)

Denim is priced well at only $95, including some of the on-trend brightly colored pairs. And, of course, there was plenty of the company's signature shirts ($95), sleek blazers ($250), or striped sweaters ($125). But if we could only grab one thing at this sale, we would spend all of our hard-earned duckets on one of the brand's limited-edition extraordinary fantasmic macrame pieces ($295).

Standouts among the discounted menswear offerings include sharp Martin Fielding suiting blazers (for $595) and pants ($195). And, for those still searching for a Father's Day present, there is a plentiful selection of snazzy ties (only $35) and straw hats ($65). Stock will be replenished daily and there is a good chance that prices will come down even more at the end of the week. Also, one last word of advice: Ladies, the dressing rooms are communal so dress accordingly.
