Which Sunscreens I'm Using
The most common questions I get asked used to vacillate, neck-and-neck, between "How do I get rid of wrinkles?" and "How do I get rid of acne?". Not this year: Both concerns have been blown out of the water by "What sunscreen should I/do you use?" And after the recent reports on the new FDA sunscreen rules the questioning is just getting more intense.
Note: I like physical sunscreens that are not made with nano particles. Though the FDA is fine with both chemical sunscreens and nano particles. It's just my utterly unscientific choice. If you feel the same way, the sunscreen you're looking for is the HARDEST to rub in. If it's white and irksomely unblendable, that's what I'm looking for. That said, these are the most blendable of the irksomely unblendable. In my opinion,
Yes to Carrots Hydrating Body Lotion with SPF 30, $14.99, yestocarrots.com
If I am going out in the full sun, as in pool/running/gardening, SPF 30 is my rule. I don't care about an SPF 675 (and neither does the FDA in their new ruling, which takes effect next year. They are proposing nothing higher than SPF 50). The one I like the best is Yes to Carrots SPF 30 for body. It rubs in much better than it should, considering how all-natural it is. And it feels more like moisturizer and less like sunscreen. I go through tubes and tubes of the stuff--it is that good.
Surf-Vival SPF 30+ Mineral Sunscreen, $14.99, smartgirlswhosurf.com
For the actual beach I love Surf-Vival SPF 30. It is also relatively rub-in-able and it feels fantastic AND it says reef-friendly on the label (some sunscreen ingredients kill coral, which is already having a very hard time of it).
Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40, $32, josiemarancosmetics.com
John Masters Organics SPF 30 Natural Mineral Sunscreen, $32, johnmasters.com
If it's a sunny day--a regular day, work or weekend--I like Josie Maran SPF 40 for face with argan oil, or John Masters Organics SPF 30 for face. Both smell and feel good, rub right in, etc. I also love that they both come in a pump. Neither breaks me out, and I tend to break out. I also put either one on my hands at the same time as I do my face. (Take it from an ancient: The hands are the first to go, so do it!)
Lavanila SPF 30 Body Cream, $38, Lavanila.com
Last but not least, I take a tube of Lavanila SPF 30 in my makeup bag, to reapply as needed, and because most of the time you end up sunburned, it's because you ended up unexpectedly out in the sun (outdoor table at lunch, etc).
There. That's my answer.
